@blake3653 @nielsonTSN1260 he works for the Edmonton station and openly cheers for the Oilers. it's pretty unprofessional that he's doing national broadcasts, including this and the CFL.

So it turns out the Lime Scooter installations that are deleting parking spaces for working class renters in Vancouver are owned by Uber, Alphabet and assorted big Silicon Valley investors. So much for Elbows Up. Who on City Council is fronting for this?

Last time I checked, Vancouver was a city in British Columbia, Canada. What are foreign flags doing in Vancouver city council meeting, and where are the B.C. and the Canadian flags?!

This has been a permanently closed-off section of street in Yaletown for several years for a public plaza, and the pavement mural is one way the space is activated. I walk past it every day to and from work and eat lunch nearby, too. The Yaletown BIA also helps maintain and program the plaza, including the regular seasonal suspended art installations above it that help bring life to the space. There was already a previous pavement mural there (the one shown in the older photo below), but it was beginning to reach the end of its lifespan. Regardless of FIFA, sooner or later, the plaza would eventually have received a replacement mural with a new design anyway. And I'd expect this mural would remain in place until it starts to fade away again. The Yaletown BIA is also leading the installation of this mural with a FIFA theme. In the last few years, BIAs across the city, especially those on the downtown peninsula, have been putting a lot more time and resources into placemaking as it is one of the few and most effective things they can do within their limited capacity to help attract people to their struggling districts and support businesses. It's important to put things into proper perspective and context. If organizations like the Canadian Taxpayers Federation want to have a serious conversation about public spending, their attention would be better directed toward public expenditures that meaningfully impact taxpayers. They do important work but, generally, nitpicking nominal costs consistently and not being a bit more targeted distracts from the much larger and more consequential costs and policy decisions that actually deserve very significant scrutiny and debate, and that goes for other things far beyond FIFA.

We’re repainting city streets for seven international soccer games. No wonder Vancouver FIFA games are costing taxpayers more than half a billion dollars….

@DeputyChow Maybe you can actually do your job this year and instead of asking a group enjoying a BBQ to pour out their beer, focus on meth heads a few blocks away

Park Rangers play an important role in helping keep our beaches safe, but they need to be properly resourced. They’re often the first point of contact, helping address issues early so situations don’t escalate and require a police response, much like security or doormen at a club. When the decision was made to allow alcohol on beaches, safety planning and staffing evolved, but more needs to be done. Without the right supports in place, we can see increases in: ⬆️ Fights & Assaults ⬆️ Sexual assaults ⬆️ Noise complaints ⬆️ Violent incidents Police will continue doing our part to keep people safe when needed, but stronger partnerships and more collaborative planning are essential to making the beaches safe and enjoyable for everyone.
