There is an American fast-food chain that you barely see in mainland Japan, but in Okinawa, people still love it like it’s part of everyday life. A&W. It was born in California in 1919, and came to Okinawa in 1963, before Okinawa was returned to Japan. In Okinawa, a lot of people call it “Ender.” Their most famous drink is root beer. It has “beer” in the name, but it’s not alcohol. It’s a fizzy drink with a unique herbal taste. Some people crave it every time they go to Okinawa. And if you try it for the first time, you might think, “Wait… what flavor is this?” But that unique taste is part of the A&W experience. Curly fries. Mozza Burger. The A&W Burger. Even the menu feels a little American. Okinawa is Japan, but it has a different history from the mainland. And A&W feels like one of those places where you can still taste that history.

If Pizza Hut can return, then we can resurrect Blockbuster. And we should. While Netflix made things more “convenient” we lost something irreplaceable: The ritual of going to a place with your family or friends to choose a story together. That experience was special.
