NASA Astronaut Requirements: 1. U.S. Citizenship (dual citizenship is allowed). 2. Master’s Degree in a STEM field (engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science, or mathematics) from an accredited institution. 3. Alternative ways to meet the master’s degree requirement: a. Two years (36 semester hours or 54 quarter hours) of work toward a doctoral program in a related STEM field. b. A completed Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree (or related medical degree). c. Completion (or current enrollment that will result in completion by the specified deadline, of a nationally recognized test pilot school program. Professional Experience ( At least two to three years of related, progressively responsible professional experience obtained after degree completion.) 4. OR at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command (PIC) time in jet aircraft (typically with at least 850 hours in high-performance jets for pilot roles). 5. For medical doctors: Residency time can count toward the experience requirement (must be completed by the deadline). 6. Be able to successfully pass the NASA long-duration flight astronaut physical. 7. Strong abilities in leadership, teamwork, and communications. These are the core minimum qualifications to be considered. NASA reviews applications holistically, and selection is extremely competitive (thousands apply for only a handful of spots every few years).
