This is Lupita Nyong'o. She plays Helen of Troy in THE ODYSSEY. She also plays Helen's sister. She is stunning. I thought so when I saw her in BLACK PANTHER and I think so now. For the past few days I keep seeing posts with an unappealing still from the film, presumably when one of her characters is racked with anguish, side by side with a still of Diane Kruger, who played the character in TROY. These posts, and the comments beneath them, have been ugly, hateful, and racist to a shocking degree, comparing her to an ape while thousands of people laugh and chime in. How much of this is done by bots versus actual people, I don't know. What I do know is that playground bullies who never grew up have found their home online. They were silent for a long time because the rest of us shouted them down. Now they are bolder than I have ever seen in my lifetime. It feels like we've reverted back to a level of hate and ignorance I only grew up learning about in school, a place before the Civil Rights movement. People upset that a black actor was cast in a role traditionally played by white actors usually don't complain when the door swings the other way. White actors have been playing other races since the beginning. But setting aside casting quibbles, we should all be able to agree that personal attacks on anyone for their race, especially using hateful language that we buried long ago, is unacceptable. I am a white, straight male who believes in Jesus Christ. I stand firmly against any and all movements to silence or hide people who are not white, people who are not straight, people who are not male, and people who are not Christian. It is partially my faith in Christ that motivates me to stand for the oppressed, the marginalized, and those who are different. It is also partially just me trying to be a decent human being. I'm not worried about losing my seat at the table. I will stand against anyone who tries to deprive another of theirs. There are extreme voices on both sides who are just trying to get theirs. They are the loudest. The rest of us can meet in the middle to protect each other's right to exist, to live how we choose. Say no to hate.

You could never do this with the Quran, and there’s a massive reason why. To Muslims, the Quran isn’t a fashion statement or a cool design. It’s the literal word of God. We don’t even touch the text without washing first, let alone wear it as streetwear. Imagine wearing a jacket covered in sacred verses into a toilet, a club, or any unclean place. It just doesn't sit right. Trying to make faith "trendy" usually just ends up stripping away the respect it deserves. Some things are meant to stay sacred.

Some guy tipped me ten dollars in quarters, and I’m still trying to figure out what kind of person thinks that’s acceptable. I just finished a DoorDash order, and he casually mentions he forgot to tip in the app—which, fine, not ideal, whatever. Then he dramatically pulls out a literal roll of quarters like he’s handing me the crown jewels. He looks me dead in the eye and says, “Sorry man, I didn’t tip on the app, this is all I’ve got.” Yeah, thanks. I love holding a handful of coins like it’s 1998. I don’t use change. I’m not a parking meter. I’m not walking around with rolls of quarters or dumping them into a Coinstar just to get the money I already earned. I took it because arguing over coins isn’t how I planned to spend my day, but that doesn’t make it okay. Tipping in quarters is peak absurdity. Tip in the app, tip in bills, tip digitally—literally anything that doesn’t involve me schlepping around loose metal. Acting like this is normal? Pure comedy. And yes, no one should ever think a pocketful of coins counts as a tip.
