In 2018, Greg Manteufel was at a birthday party where he played with many dogs. A few days later, he experienced a fever and weakness in his limbs so he went to the doctor’s office. His condition rapidly deteriorated and doctors discovered Manteufel had contracted a blood infection caused by capnocytophaga, a bacteria found in the mouths of dogs. His situation was so severe that doctors told him his blood platelet count was so low he only had three hours to live. Typically the infection caused fevers, diarrhea, headaches and vomiting. But in more extreme cases it can lead to severe sepsis, fatal septic shock, and gangrene of the extremities. Manteufel had to undergo numerous amputations to save his life, which left him without his forearms, legs and parts of his nose. But thankfully, he survived the infection.
