My dad is the one who buys foodstuffs in the house. He buys everything in large quantities. Everything! So we've never suffered for food. The only time he eats at home is dinner. Except for weekends. One day, he said he wanted yam because he bought it in large quantity the previous month. And we told him yam is finished. He asked, "All that yams?" We answered yes. His response was, " Oga oo, I didn't even eat from it." He just went out. We felt bad when he came back carrying bag of yams, that day I realised that he doesn't even eat much from what he worked hard for. Yet he did not stop buying.

Although we don’t yet have the details about the motives behind last night's shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner, it’s incumbent upon all us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy. It’s also a sobering reminder of the courage and sacrifice that U.S. Secret Service Agents show every day. I’m grateful to them – and thankful that the agent who was shot is going to be okay.

Amid the flood of felicitations following my convocation as Overall Best Graduating Student of LAUTECH, I find it necessary to address the stir around my NELFUND appreciation post. I accept the praise, life changing offers and the backlash, in good faith. Still, it is only fair to set the record straight. I hail from a village in Osun State, raised in a modest family of five. I attended public primary and secondary schools, not by choice, but because even the most inexpensive private schools were beyond our means. Even then, survival itself; food and clothing was a daily struggle. I walked miles to school each morning, while my parents laboured as jacks-of-all-trades to make ends meet. For nine defining years before I entered university, we lived within sight of basic amenities yet beyond our reach, no electricity, no television; just lanterns and candles. Against these odds, I earned a scholarship and now this distinction. In my third year, a coursemate’s father, someone I had once tutored academically, gifted me my first smartphone which I am still using till now. On several occasions, lecturers, moved by quiet compassion, provided me with clothing. There are many other instances, too numerous to recount. So, I say this plainly, not all of us are born with a silver spoon. Some of us climbed the ladder by holding on to every rung of legitimate support we could find. As an engineering student aspiring to make academic history, should I resort myself to blaming my family’s financial situation for my inability to afford fees and essentials like a reliable smartphone or laptop needed for skills and certifications? For me personally, NELFUND was not incidental; it was instrumental and to acknowledge what helped one’s journey is neither propaganda nor misplaced allegiance. It is simply an act of appreciation. Thank you @NELFUND and everyone that contributed to this success! Greatness awaits all of Us.

Healthcare System Under Pressure as Over 4,600 Nigerian Doctors Relocate to UK Since 2023, Deepening Health crisis Nigeria’s healthcare system is facing renewed strain as thousands of doctors continue to leave the country for better opportunities abroad, particularly in the United Kingdom. Data from the General Medical Council shows that at least 4,691 Nigerian doctors have relocated to the UK since May 29, 2023, when President Bola Tinubu assumed office. The figure highlights a steady rise in medical migration driven by working conditions and economic challenges. The total number of Nigerian-trained doctors practising in the UK is now estimated at about 15,692, making Nigeria one of the largest sources of foreign-trained doctors in Britain, second only to India. Experts warn that the trend is worsening Nigeria’s already fragile healthcare system. The country’s doctor-to-population ratio remains far below the World Health Organization’s recommended standard, leaving hospitals overstretched and healthcare delivery under pressure. The migration also represents a major financial loss. With about $21,000 spent to train each doctor, Nigeria is estimated to have lost nearly $100 million in human capital investment within a short period. Health professional bodies, including the Nigerian Medical Association and the National Association of Resident Doctors, attribute the exodus to poor remuneration, inadequate infrastructure, insecurity, and heavy workloads. Many doctors say they are overworked and burnt out, pushing them to seek better conditions abroad. Despite policy efforts aimed at reducing the “Japa” trend among health workers, analysts say the root causes remain unresolved. Meanwhile, Nigerians continue to spend heavily on medical treatment overseas, further exposing gaps in the local healthcare system.

We have received a new set of 24-car trains to strengthen the Lagos Red Line fleet. This will improve capacity, reduce wait times and make daily commuting easier for Lagosians. We remain focused on building a transport system that is efficient and reliable for everyone. That is still our goal.
