My new book, "Broken Engagement," with interviews of top China policy makers is like a conversation across administrations about engaging with China, competing with China and, more recently, defending against China. amazon.com/Broken-Engagem…

Drawing on the lessons of Vietnam and the 1983 Marine Barracks bombing in Lebanon, SecDef Weinberger listed requirements for US military engagements. Later expanded by Vietnam vet Colin Powell, the Weinberger-Powell Doctrine explains later failures in Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

@HowardS15110279 Good point. The way I look at it is that it’s better than the alternative of joblessness.

@bobdavis187 Great article (as usual), but I question how increase in healthcare jobs (which is the only area of sustained growth in the US) is actually a positive. While it is essential that we take care of our aging and co-morbid population, I would hope to growth in more productive areas.

The Unlikely Recovery of America’s China-Shocked Towns. Trump's twin projects of tariffs and immigration crackdowns don't get the credit. If anything, they threaten the recovery. nytimes.com/2026/04/20/opi…

Meanwhile, this nugget from @bobdavis187 is instructive (in a depressing sort of way): Trump's tariffs and immigration policies are hurting the very industries and people he says he's helping

Once devastated by competition from imports, towns like Hickory, NC are making a comeback. Jobs are returning, and incomes are rising. But the reasons have nothing to do with Trump and tariffs. Spoiler: It is often services and immigrants by @BobDavis187 nytimes.com/2026/04/20/opi…

@ProfDBernstein @EylonALevy Does South Korea pay for weapons used to outfit its military? Emanuel is clearly trying to find a formula that would enable Dems to continue to support Israel’s military. Israel is a wealthy country as is South Korea.

How do people with a straight face say that Israel get "military aid" but South Korea doesn't, simply bc one is officially in the foreign aid budget, and one is buried in the military budget. The US has over 20K soldiers stationed in South Korea, there as a tripwire in case the North attacks. This costs *FAR* more than military aid to Israel, and also puts thousands of American soldiers directly in harm's way.
RedWave Press@RedWavePress

Rahm Emanuel: “No more U.S. military aid—financial assistance from the taxpayers for Israel. You’re a country like all other allies of ours, Japan, South Korea, the Brits, the Germans. You’re going to pay full price; you can buy what you want, but you have to abide by the laws that should be it.” “No more U.S. taxpayer support... I was in the room when President Obama’s largest assistance was under President Obama. We did the funding for the Iron Dome. But here, the days of taxpayer subsidizing Israel are over.” “No more financial aid.”

No matter how a war with Iran ends militarily, its broader consequences may matter far more. If the aftermath results in a significant deterioration of Israel’s standing, in the United States, then any battlefield gains risk being overshadowed. For Israel, the relationship with the United States is not just another diplomatic asset, it is a cornerstone of its long-term security and international position. If the Iranian conflict undermines that relationship or erodes bipartisan support in Washington, the long-term cost could outweigh any short-term military gains. If its standing in the U.S., is weaker after this conflict than before, then it raises serious doubts about the strategic wisdom that guided Israel into the war against Iran.
Aaron David Miller@aarondmiller2

Between Trump and Netanyahu they eroded the most important adhesive in the US-Israeli relationship: bipartisanship. And both set out to undermine and ignore anyone in the Jewish community who didn’t hold right-wing views.

@NadavPollak @EylonALevy Emanuel is looking to set out a position where Dems can still support Israel at a time when the country’s policies are making it a pariah. Israel can afford to live without US military aide. And the US arms industry will still benefit.

I’m all for less Israeli dependency on US military aid, but I hate, hate, that democrats present this as Israel was free loading. Let’s make it clear: - US weapons industry got much of this money. - the US received great access to Israeli weapons R&D because of this - US national security was bolstered because Israel was so powerful in the region with these weapons. - Historically speaking, the fact Israel was winning wars with US weapons against Soviet/Russian weapons bolstered US weapons industry

UPDATE: Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar sent a text message today to his Ukrainian counterpart & wrote that unfortunately it is too late & the vessel has already left the port of Haifa and therefore it cannot be detained (the Israeli Foreign Ministry knew about this vessel two weeks before it arrived at the port).Senior Ukrainian officials tell me they made it clear to Israel that they are demanding the confiscation of the wheat cargo
Barak Ravid@BarakRavid

🚨🇺🇦🇮🇱 Ukraine today asked Israel for clarifications regarding the fact that a vessel allegedly belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet” docked at the port of Haifa with a shipment of wheat originating from territories that Russia occupied from Ukraine during the war, according to a senior Ukrainian official and another source familiar with the details ❗️Why it matters: This incident could turn out to be a significant violation by Israel of U.S. and international sanctions imposed on Russia and its “shadow fleet” ❓If this is indeed the case, it is a serious incident that contradicts the declared policy of the Israeli government 🚢 Ukraine is demanding that Israel detain the Russian vessel, which Ukraine claims is under international sanctions, and prevent it from leaving the port 🕵️ Behind the scenes: A senior Ukrainian official told me that Ukrainian intelligence identified the preparations of the Russian vessel to depart from the Black Sea with a cargo of grain originating from territories that Russia captured from Ukraine 🇺🇦 Ukrainian intelligence prepared a file with information on the matter and transferred it to the Prosecutor General’s Office in Ukraine on March 20 🇺🇦🇮🇱 On March 27, Ukraine’s ambassador to Israel, Yevgen Korniychuk, met with senior officials at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, handed over the information, warned that this constitutes a violation of sanctions, and requested that the vessel not be allowed to dock in Israel 🛳️ A senior Ukrainian official told me that, based on the Prosecutor General’s request, a Ukrainian court issued on April 8 a detention order for the Russian vessel 🏗️ Today, after the Russian vessel docked at the port of Haifa, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General met with Israel’s ambassador to Kyiv, Michael Brodsky, and handed him a request for international legal assistance - and for the detention of the vessel

@scmallaby Good idea. But according to Jake Sullivan it took more than a year to get China just to agree not to use AI in nuclear launch decisions, the most obvious safety measure. Not sure you can count on much.

Back in 2022, I supported the Biden chip-export controls on China. After a week with Chinese AI researchers and tech leaders, I've changed my mind. The controls are not working, and they obstruct another strategy that just might work. Models like Anthropic's Mythos show us how dangerous AI is becoming. Not governing AI is not an option. nytimes.com/2026/04/13/opi…
