@GreatBBQXchange @ShamashAran @hotcake_kun_ First time I had Santa Maria BBQ I was a +1 at a wedding. It was a fancy affair with some local caterer that went all out. Mid 90’s I think. Anyway, never had better since then at a restaurant. But I am an optimist and keep ordering :-)

@BoydsArchitect @ShamashAran @hotcake_kun_ I lived in Santa Maria in the ‘80s, when every Saturday, Broadway Ave. was full of smoke and every parking lot had Lions or Kiwanis or some such grilling Tri Tip and serving it up with pilaf, salad, rolls, pinquito beans and salsa. Mmmm. Not the same anymore.

If you bring alcohol, you won’t go wrong. Even if your hosts don’t drink they will appreciate your good intentions. Ideal would be a drink from Japan (sake, plum
wine, whiskey), but even domestic beer you just bought at a gas station fulfills the social contract.
Other options, depending on the situation:
1) A decorative item from Japan for their home
2) Offer to prepare some food, or make it yourself beforehand
3) Any dessert
4) Candy or chocolate
BUT, if the invite says “potluck” then try to bring food, such as a side dish. You can always buy these pre-packaged at American supermarkets.

One thing I hope everyone in Japan understands; the invitations to join Americans in their BBQ cookouts are sincere. Westerners have a tradition of hospitality similar to Japan's, and it would be a delight to reciprocate the hospitality Japan has shown us.

@BoydsArchitect @ShamashAran @hotcake_kun_ What's crazy is tri-tip went from being a "trash cut" of meat nobody wanted to now being expensive. Although the prices seem to be leveling out, I remember for a while like 15 years ago it was getting stupid.

We are all this excited about pork belly.
Also this story reminds me of one time I saw 3 Japanese tourists at Walmart. One of the girls bent at a 90 degree angle at the hips and pointed at a giant bra, large enough to fit her head in one cup, and made this noise like “ehhhhHHHH?!?”
Her friends had to pull her away, they were so embarrassed.

燻製した鶏肉に、マヨネーズと酢をベースにした「ホワイトソース」をかける独特のスタイルが知られています。
補足
これらのスタイルはそれぞれ特定の地域に由来していますが、実際にはアメリカ全土で広く楽しまれており、地域を越えてさまざまなスタイルが作られています。例えば、テキサスでもメンフィス風のバーベキューが提供されることがあります。
また、「どのスタイルが一番おいしいか」という議論はよく見られますが、これは半ば冗談のようなものであり、実際にはどのスタイルであっても、目の前に出されたバーベキューを皆で楽しむというのが一般的です。
