@LissaKEvans So well put. Everything you say chimes with our feelings. David Lodge has been a favourite with my wife and I since we laughed ourselves silly over How Far Can You Go when we shared a student house back in the early 80s and will be much missed.

'Author, Author' his novel about Henry James is particularly wonderful- especially if read in tandem with 'The Year of Henry James', a ruefully funny non-fiction book about Lodge's discovery that two other authors were also writing books about Henry James 3/3

I was a huge fan, and many of his books are among my favourite re-reads. He could be enormously funny, but also acute, touching and wise; He often wrote about self-effacing people, edging through life, but he was marvellous, too, at creating monstrous characters. 1/3
