A very interesting case here. This was a mid-end EF-2 tornado that occurred during the night of March 13, 2021, close to where I live. This storm occurred during the nighttime hours and temperatures were around 50 degrees.

@sambrandt99 Hey Sam, I wanted to ask something if you happen to know, there was a discussion on Twitter a few years back and they were trying to determine why this hodograph causes supercells to take on this shape. And I also wanted made diagrams to know what components dictate these shapes.

A simple way to diagnose storm propagation is to look at the anvil blowoff axis on satellite. If you see it tilt to the left, then the storm has begun to propagate to the right. This is what that may look like today in NY based on the wind profile above.

Interesting environment from a tornado perspective in New York this afternoon. Minimal low-level hodograph curvature means that streamwise vorticity will be extremely sensitive to storm propagation. Low LCLs and large 3CAPE could help compensate for the lackluster wind profile.

@BraggiDocio Great question! There was technically a "Tornado Emergency" issued in October 2007 for the Nappanee EF3 but it was unofficial. I believe the Tornado Emergency tag began being used officially nationwide in the NWS starting in 2016 when Impact Based Warnings began. -Maddi

The Tornado Emergency issued yesterday at 9:37 PM EDT/8:37 PM CDT for Knox, IN (Starke County) was the 3rd ever issued by our office. The other times a Tornado Emergency has been issued by IWX was on May 7, 2024 in Branch County, MI and on August 24, 2016 in Henry County, OH.
