I just have a burner acct but I’ve met four people off Twitter in real life (I am less toxic in real life I’m told!), two have become close personal friends. Connected with some great authors too in the survivalist/defense/gun space. Despite all the nonsense on here you can meet some amazing people.

I’ve loved nice watches since my early 20’s. I thought it’d be a flex, a symbol of success, purely performative. I wanted the James Bond Omega Seamaster. But I was 25 and broke as fuck. My grandfather loved watches too. After he passed, I inherited a box of his watches. Some old Seikos, a Hamilton, a windup solid gold Wakmann with a beautiful red mother of pearl dial and solid gold case (Breitling movement, Wakmann was an American company buying parts from Breitling and re-assembling them under a different name in the U.S. to avoid post-WW2 tariffs). It deserves a cordovan leather strap. Then I got a windfall of disposable cash, bought an Omega Seamaster 300. Then later another windfall from work and I got a 1980’s two tone Datejust. The only people who noticed were dudes when I was working at a real estate private equity shop, they be wrist lookin in the elevators. Young guys, like I was. A pack of bros were in the elevators and one made a comment. I said Save your money man, it’s not gonna get you laid in a bar trust me. The only people who notice are other dudes. And the Rolex AD will treat you like you walked in to the shop covered in poop. At least the Omega sales people treat you well and you can walk in, run the card, and walk out with a new watch. The Omega gets more “wrist time” (such a douche bag watch guy term). It’s all silly. I just buy them for myself now though, because I like them, not to flex. My ex still tries to flex on people at brunch with her Gucci purse etc. Don’t know where I was going with this story, other than it’s all Veblen goods that mean nothing ultimately.

Another episode of watch-talk. I was never really into watches but when I was in my early 30s, a mutual friend had a Rolex. He had a good job, a nice car and really had his life together. I thought I should buy a watch. I wasn't a watch guy, but I really liked his Rolex. At the time, that seemed like a tremendous amount of money and it would have been reckless to buy it. I started reading about watch stuff online and saw the Citizen Ecozilla dive watch. An absolute tank of a watch. Insanely bright lume at night. It was HUGE. I figured this would be my first watch. I loved it. It never left my wrist. After a few years of wearing it daily, it wore some scars. Some dents. Some scratches. As would be expected. I wore it doing things that aren't great on watches. Shooting courses where I found myself laying in the dirt, fixing things. Just getting banged around. I just loved it. I bought my first Rolex. A See Dweller deep sea. It was huge and awesome like the Citizen, but it said Rolex on it. I threw the Citizen in box and never saw it again. Last week I saw it in that box. It's dirty, it was totally dead and needed to be charged in the sun. I cleaned it up and man, works perfectly. I packed it this trip and put it on. It needs a deep cleaning and it'll be nearly as good as new. I stopped wearing it because it was "cheap" at 500 bucks and I moved on to bigger and better things. Im over on chrono 24 looking at VC and Patek to buy and I'm just pumped I found my first watch. The one that got me obsessed. It didn't matter that it was only 500 bucks then, I loved it. That shouldn't change now that my budget is much larger. After I clean it up a bit, it's going back into rotation. It's cool af.
