The Journal.ie Reveals Its Liberal Bias in Leader Popularity CoverageIn a clear display of selective reporting by refusing to acknowledge Tóibín as country's most popular leader, as according to a poll they themselves carried out.
The Journal.ie has once again highlighted its liberal and left leanings by crowning Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns as "Ireland's most popular leader" in a headline and article published on May 3, 2026.
The piece draws on the latest Ireland Thinks poll for the Sunday Independent, which shows Cairns with a 39% approval rating among party leaders.
This edges out Mary Lou McDonald (34%), Micheál Martin (33%), Simon Harris (31%), and Ivana Bacik (31%). The article frames Cairns as the clear favourite while asking readers who they would like to see as Taoiseach.
However, the same article quietly buries the results of The Journal.ie's own reader poll on the very same question.
In that interactive vote, Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín topped the list with 2,981 votes, narrowly ahead of Holly Cairns on 2,857. Mary Lou McDonald trailed in third with 2,119 votes.
This discrepancy speaks volumes. While professional pollsters measure broader public sentiment, the site's own engaged readership often more reflective of grassroots Irish opinion on issues like immigration, housing, and national identity clearly prefers Tóibín, whose party takes a more conservative, sovereignty focused stance.
Yet The Journal.ie chose to lead with the establishment-friendly narrative around Cairns, a figure aligned with progressive social policies, while downplaying the reader results that contradict it.
By prioritising Cairns in the headline despite their own data showing otherwise, The Journal.ie underscores why many readers increasingly view outlets like it as echo chambers rather than neutral reporters of fact. True popularity should reflect all voices not just the ones that suit the editorial line.

@JakeFitzsimons There is no Endometriosis or gynaecology care for woman in Ireland. Yet the government are paying for woman to be treated abroad . Woman should have access to proper medical care in their own country and not have to travel abroad for treatment

@paddymacc1 Yet, and even if there isnt why would you contemplate getting into another compromise government consisting of SF and the cast offs from FG FF and Aontu who are all pro EU and mass migration.
If you want change this isnt it,they'll all be just rotating in the same system.

@RonanMullen If age verification is required for children - it's for all of us. One step closer to Digital ID. Whilst I fully agree children shouldn't be on social media - it's clear that the government has no regard for child safeguarding given what's in the classroom.

@MaryKenny4 You cannot dry clothes outdoors in winter and drying wet clothes indoors causes dampness and mould leading to health problems. Good for the climate does not make any sense
English

Tumble dryers are expensive on energy and mostly unnecessary - a trad clothes-line much better for clothes and climate. On this, I’m with Ed M.
