To everyone recently questioning Dolby Level 7 and why a film maker will throw things at you if you don’t understand!!

The first thing that needs to be said about the 4K disc of The Running Man is that it is infinitely — and I do mean infinitely — superior to the DCP in picture quality. The DCP looked dreadful, largely because the bit rate was so low. It gave the impression that the entire film was out of focus, which simply wasn’t the case.

Did you notice that almost ever disc you showed in response to Jon has the THX logo? One of the things THX addressed was how to “nerf” a theatrical mix down to accommodate a smaller, more intimate environment. And today we have a separate physical media audio track doing what THX was doing in the 90’s. They’re not really “nerfing” the sound they’re making it more compatible with our smaller viewing environments.

All studios do this. Home releases have reduced dynamic range—it’s been that way for 30 years. LaserDisc was the last format to carry something close to the theatrical mix. Since DVD, everything’s been re-EQ’d and remixed down. Not a Disney issue—industry-wide.

Miss Information - Disney hasn’t handled its own disc distribution since 2024 — it outsourced physical media to Sony. So the home entertainment team was effectively obsolete anyway, especially once Disney Movie Club shut down. This is just the long tail of that deal. It won’t affect Disney’s physical media output — if anything, Sony’s team is highly efficient and very good at this, and the business remains profitable.
