30-06 Tumbling at 100 Yards For all the Fudd ballisticians out there: .30-06 can indeed start tumbling within 140 yards, as can any caliber. There are dozens of reasons this can happen. The projectile can be defective, damaged, or altered; the rifling in a barrel (especially in older rifles) can be damaged or worn; or the twist rate can be inadequate for the projectile weight. Heavier bullets require a faster twist. If a bullet lacks proper gyroscopic stability, it will experience excessive yaw or even tumble. Excessive yaw almost guarantees the bullet will not exit a target. Terminal ballistics become wildly unpredictable, and upon impacting bone, even a non-frangible bullet can fragment excessively. Once again, the claim that Charlie being shot with a .30-06 and having no exit wound is “impossible” is one of the most ignorant assertions in this investigation. There are dozens of real-world case studies showing similar results. This is just one of many explanations, without even touching on varmint rounds (nearly all frangible variants) or other commercially available rounds designed to limit penetration. Given that .30-06 is almost an antiquated caliber now, you can find many more examples with .308 and 300 Win Mag, which are much more common and ballistically similar. At the end of the day, there are hundreds of plausible explanations for what happened. We won’t know for sure until we see the ballistics reports, but the idea that it’s “impossible” is utterly ridiculous.
