Day 1 of the Advanced Human Rights Course in Disability Rights, hosted by the @CHR_HumanRights,@UPTuks reminded us that disability is not distant, it’s part of everyday life. Advancing rights means shifting mindsets, language, and systems toward dignity, access, and inclusion. #DisabilityRights #AHRC2026 #HumanRights

Today we marked Human Rights Day in South Africa, a moment to reflect on the struggles that shaped our freedom and the responsibility we share to protect it. This year is especially meaningful for the @CHR_HumanRights, @UPTuks as we celebrate 40 years of advancing human rights in Africa. Founded in 1986, during a time when human rights were deeply contested in South Africa, the Centre was established to promote human dignity, justice, and democratic values through education, research, and advocacy. Over four decades, we have grown into a leading institution shaping human rights discourse and training generations of advocates across the continent. As we commemorate the day, we also celebrate 40 years of commitment to building a more just and equal Africa, and the many voices, scholars, and defenders who continue this work every day.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe,ARTUZ
Suspected State agents in the company of confirmed members of @PoliceZimbabwe disrupted our membership meeting at Tsholotsho Business Center. The rogue characters tortured our leaders Cde Vusa and Cde Hudson. Our leaders were pressed to reveal the whereabouts of President @OMasaraure The President is reportedly being hunted down by State agents in Tsholotsho. The Union condemns this barbarism from the State and is assisting the members to press charges against the known agents. CDE Masaraure was reassigned to another program last minute and only escaped brutality because of the last minute changes. @daddyhope @MakomboreroH @CdeTatenda

The Oil, Gas and the Energy Transition workshop has commenced in Cape Town with a keynote presentation by Thuli Makama, Senior Advisor for Africa at Oil Change International (@PriceofOil). She noted that global supply disruptions linked to the war in the Middle East will inevitably affect African economies through rising oil prices and growing geopolitical pressures. Makama emphasised that the Just Energy Transition presents a major opportunity for Africa to address energy poverty, with more than 600 million Africans still lacking access to electricity. The transition must ensure that African people gain access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy. She also challenged Africa to confront global power dynamics shaping the energy transition: “The Global North is not pretending anymore. They are aggressive about pushing their own agenda. Can Africa match that energy for its own future?” In many Western countries, delivering cheap and reliable energy is an electoral priority, and government policies are shaped by that reality. African legislators and executives must therefore accelerate the uptake of renewable energy, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and ensure that energy systems are locally owned and benefit African economies. In this context, global climate commitments — including the pledge to triple installed renewable energy capacity and transition away from fossil fuels — must be translated into concrete action that supports Africa’s development and energy access goals. #JustTransition #SADC #EnergyTransition #ClimateJustice #Africa
