Since people were excited for this in @SoveyX’s post, when I responded to her, let me post it here too. HOMEMADE LAUNDRY SOAP! Cheap, easy, less chemicals. (Recipe below) OK, all y’all. This LOOKS and SOUNDS intimidating. It’s not. You’ll do it once, slowly, but you’ll see there’s nothing to it and be able to make a batch in no time flat that has way less chemicals and saves a ton. Ok. For this, you’re going to need to a laundry/washing soap. However, if you’re trying to avoid scents or have a member of your household who has skin allergy problems, you do have options. If you’re trying to accommodate a family member with sensitive skin, find a scentless Castile soap that has coconut oil base. This will prevent residue on your clothes. VERY important that you find a coconut-oil based Castile soap for this. (I found all this out trying to accommodate a niece of mine with sensitive skin and they were spending stupid amounts of money on specialized products). For this you are going to need baking soda AND washing soda. Those are two separate products and they are NOT interchangeable. With that out of the way, you will need: Two bars of soap, grated (use a cheese grater) 1 cup washing soda 1 cup baking soda 1 cup borax 4 gallons of water, separated Heavy bottom pot 5 gallon bucket (Possibly some salt*) Put 4-6 cups of the water in the pot and put the heat on low until the water comes up to a steaming temperature. When the water gets to steaming, add the grated soap flakes to it and stir until they’re fully dissolved. Once the soap is dissolved, add the washing soda, baking soda, and borax. Stir until dissolved. Pour the mixture into the 5 gal bucket and then add the remaining water and stir vigorously (I found using an immersion blender helps). Let it rest overnight. It may stay thin* or it may gel. *If the consistency isn’t gelled, you can try adding salt. Put about 4-6 cups of the laundry soap back in the pot. Bring it up to temp on a low temp, stir in about 1/2 a TABLESPOON of salt and stir it in vigorously. Add the salted mixture back into the 5 gallon bucket and stir it vigorously too. Let it sit over night and see where it’s at the next day. It it’s still not gelled enough, repeat the process by putting some in the pot on the stove and adding 1/2 TBSP of salt, and letting it cool. You will need about 2-3 TABLESPOONS of the mix for your average load, 1/4 a cup for large loads. Put the mix directly in the washing drum and NOT in the laundry soap dispenser. The laundry soap mix will require a little bit of mixing before each use. Just give it s good stir before measuring out your 2/3 TBSP or 1/4 cup. Some soaps will behave differently leading to separation, others will gel like a dream. Regardless, a mixing will fix it, whichever state it’s in. If you want more softening, add 1/2 cup white vinegar to the load. That’ll also help clean your machine. Like I said: It sounds intimidating. It’s not. You’ll manage. I hope you give this a try and it works for you. It took me a bit of trial and error as many soaps behave differently. But it results in a much cleaner product that keeps your clothes very fresh and you can be rid of those chemicals and perfumes for a fraction of the price.
