.@byEduardoMedina spent weeks talking to sources and voters to piece together how this stunning upset happened. It's a fascinating story about the power of local grievances and old feuds. Berger lost in the end by a mere 23 votes. nytimes.com/2026/03/24/us/…

@AlanRMacLeod This is part of a series on how people live in New York. Among those profiled: an artist on the Upper West Side who makes $36k a year, a florist in Ditmas Park who makes $23k a year and a family of 5 in Morningside Heights who live off $140k a year.

Fascinating piece from @byEduardoMedina about Jesse Jackson’s complicated relationship with South Carolina, where few historical markers actually recognize his legacy even as he lay in state at the Capitol this week nytimes.com/2026/03/02/us/…

SAJA hosted a lovely Iftar on Thursday in conjunction with the @MedillSchool of Journalism at Northwestern University. Thank you to Dean Charles Whitaker who sponsored four students to attend our dinner. "The Iftar captured the spirit with which SAJA has operated for three decades: open, inclusive, welcoming — traits that are desperately missing in our national conversation, and even in some newsrooms. It also showcased what makes SAJA special: the ability to work across generations," @sree Sreenivasan, co-founder and former president of SAJA said. In attendance was @rummanahussain, a fantastic columnist at The Chicago-Sun Times, as well as Al Jazeera journalist @natashaghoneim, who was on the board of The Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association (@AMEJA) for years. And of course, there were also a lot of great new young journalists! Thanks to our new board member @safiasameeali for helping to organize the event in Chicago, an amazing city with a history of excellent journalism! The event was held at Bereket Turkish, a halal restaurant in downtown Chicago.

SAJA Statement on Recent Newsroom Cuts February 5, 2026: The Board of the South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) is profoundly troubled to learn of the mass layoffs at The Washington Post and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Throughout Wednesday, we heard from numerous current and former members impacted by these cuts. We understand that about a dozen South Asian journalists were laid off from The Post, including colleagues based in the Delhi South Asia bureau and national correspondents covering film, healthcare, technology, and other beats. SAJA stands in solidarity with the Post’s Guild in opposing these layoffs and in supporting journalists in all affected newsrooms. At a time when many fear the erosion of democratic institutions, the role of journalism has never been more critical. A free and robust press is essential to informing the public and sustaining democracy. Whether or not you are a SAJA member, we stand with every journalist affected by this week’s layoffs. To provide immediate support, SAJA is offering complimentary membership to those whose employment has been terminated. Please complete this form so we can assist you. We encourage you to continue using our website for the latest job postings and to reach out to any member of the SAJA Board for guidance or support. We are also preparing a resource guide on how to navigate and prepare for layoffs, which we will share soon. See various resources at saja.org/page-935554/13…

When voters pick their next president, they are also choosing between two visions of the federal judiciary. We dive into Biden and Trump’s nominees and see what it can tell us about the next four years. From @Schwartzesque, @junemkim_ and Halina Bennet nytimes.com/2024/10/23/us/…
