Newsom is deflecting blame here. He repeatedly shut down CA businesses in 2020 & 2021. He issued stay at home orders, mask mandates, closed schools, ordered OC beaches closed, & put CA counties into color coded tiers that decided who could reopen - then threatened to cut funding to those who wouldn’t enforce it. He sent his own kids to in person learning at private school, while public schools in Sacramento County remained closed. He ordered overnight curfews. He infamously dined at French Laundry in violation of his own restrictions, then shot a TikTok video with George Lopez in a Fresno restaurant that was supposed to be closed from his restrictions. In December 2021, he issued another universal mask mandate, then broke his own rules once again when he was seen maskless at the Rams game with Eric Garcetti & London Breed. He also released thousands of violent criminals from prison due to COVID concerns, he didn’t lift CA’s state of emergency until this February, and massive EDD fraud happened under his watch.
Yes, some local governments, like LA County, went further than the state rules - but Newsom was the architect of the blueprints they used for those restrictions. Saying the state had no control is simply not true.

I ask @GavinNewsom about the lessons learned from COVID. What do we do right/wrong? Did we shut down schools too long? "We allowed local control. In some cases, yes they waited too. In other cases, they didn't." He says the state had little ability to determine that.
