@mgubrud @Gizmodo Thermal expansion of the deep water does not add mass to these equatorial waters, though, and the research here is focused on what that added mass does to Earth’s rotation. Data on paleoclimate sea level rise is merely the best information they have to estimate those mass shifts.

@CBMDP @Gizmodo Most sea level rise is not due to melt but to thermal expansion of the deep water. If you were smarter you'd have pointed out that the resulting mass redistribution also does increase the tidal drag.

I love the Nitehawk Prospect Park, which we helped rescue a decade ago, when it was abandoned and almost converted to condos. On Friday, I proudly joined the workers of @nitehawkunion – the servers, runners, cooks, and bartenders who make it a real community movie theater – in their fight for a good union contract, with the wages they deserve & need to survive in this expensive city.

@mgubrud @Gizmodo It’s almost as if there’s half a dozen other valid definitions for this word in colloquial English—beyond its use as a measure of viscous force in fluid dynamics, friction in aerospace, and various other specialized contexts where a dude wouldn’t be such a drag pointing this out.

@Gizmodo There is no "drag on Earth's spin." The mass redistribution causes an increase in the planet's moment of rotational inertia. Consequently, and simultaneously, in keeping with conservation of angular momentum, the rotation rate decreases.

I landed in Havana today. Trump’s fuel blockade is choking the life out of this city. Havana is near silent, empty streets, empty markets. Not because there’s no food, but because farmers can’t get fuel to deliver it. Trump is trying to starve 11 million people into submission. This is a crime against humanity, unfolding in plain sight. Night falls and the city struggles to keep lights on, in total defiance after 66 years of economic war. The world must stop looking away. Let Cuba live!
