@MarkMaddenX Would you offersheet Leo Carlsson? Cost next 4 first round picks. Probably 15+ mil. 21 year old star center? Huge risk, could work. Maybe use some 2nds and 3rds/trade vet to get back into the first round over the next couple years.

@AGretz Should the Pens offer sheet Leo Carlson? Or one of the Ducks other RFAs? Leo Carlsson might actually be worth 4 first-round picks, and I'm sure they could get at least one first back by selling an older player or packaging some 2nds/3rds.

I do not think that is going to happen, nor do I think they have the assets, I just wanted to make the joke.

@MarkMaddenX Dubas may want to get through the draft/free agency, make his signings/trades, set the rest of the roster, then if there's still a spot, give Malkin whatever cap is left, whether thats 3 or 6 million or whatever. If he spends first it helps him negotiate paying Malkin less.

Answer that question: If the Penguins would “love” Malkin to return, why isn’t the deal done?

With 32 teams and new lottery rules, it doesn't pay to strip it down to the studs anymore, especially since there isn't a Crosby/McDavid every year. Get younger, add prospects, assets and cap space, but you want to finish low organically/get some lottery luck for 1-2 years with a decent roster.

The Penguins became one of hockey’s top franchises by finishing last occasionally. What don’t you get?

@KDPomp @joeybagovdonuts So Habs have 2 top-5 picks. All the rest a team can get without bottoming out. You want to bottom out for just a season or two. You tear it all down, you might be in the basement for a long time (Chicago, Buffalo, etc.)

This is a great study in how teams build their rosters If Montreal advances past Tampa, they have Slafkovsky (former 1st overall) Caufield (15th overall) Ivan Demodov (5th overall) Nick Suzuki (acquired by trade but 13th overall) Noah Dobson (acquired by trade but 12th overall) Lane Hudson (62nd overall) Took a while but it has come together
Adam Gretz@AGretz

Was looking at how every team in the second round acquired its players. Obviously still waiting to see if it is Tampa Bay or Montreal, but of the seven teams already through. Trades. Lots of trades. Not as many draft picks.

@scarpizio Whoever gets the franchise player first, QB or elite forward. Pens better run so more faith in them but need some draft luck. Pirates could be contender right now if they add 30 mil in payroll but they won't do it

Which of Pittsburgh's Big Three is closest to actually competing for a Championship again? Okay, Steelers or Pens? I think it's pretty even.

@CBbA614C @vinnybatts Ok i was responding to top 4. Girard has that skill set, wheels, shot and some dawg. Like a young letang. Just give him a season to get used to the pens and not be partnered with most erratic guy ever

i think the penguins should sell big (rust, rakell, karlsson) *and* buy big (robertson, thomas, kyrou, whoever else). make your core younger while re-acquiring some of the assets you trade away to make it happen
Josh Yohe@JoshYohe_PGH

I will remind you of this: Kyle Dubas has repeatedly stated that he doesn’t just want the Penguins to be a team that’s good enough to reach the playoffs. He wants to build a championship team. Take that as you will as he enters the off-season.

I definitely understand this, but it also goes to show how hard it is to win. You need a lot to go your way. The fact that they’ve won as much as they have in this era is still unbelievable.
JFresh@JFreshHockey

it is very bad that the Pens failed to win a series in 8 years, a span where Sid scored at a 95 pt pace and Malkin scored at an 81 pt pace it's also very bad that the Caps only made it past round 2 one time in 21 years with the greatest goal scorer of all time on the roster

@AGretz @vinnybatts I keep saying it but those guys are arguably too old for the Pens already. You'd be rebuilding again in 3-4 years and idk if they make you a true contender anyway, especially with their lack of top-4 D

@CBbA614C I meant other teams looking to improve (DET, BUF, ANA, SJ, UTA etc) are gonna target those guys before giving up anything serious for the Pens’ wingers

Plus: If the Pens make Rakell/Rust available this offseason, they're better than pretty much every forward on the UFA market besides Tuch Minus: If Jason Robertson, Brady Tkachuk, Robert Thomas, Jordan Kyrou etc are on the market, the Pens' guys won't be anyone's Plan A

I think they have young depth and Kindel at least a good 2C, and good goalies, but they need a 1C and 1D under 22. They'll probably bottom out once in the next 3 seasons to hopefully get one of those. Might be able to trade up for a higher first too. Also need a legit top-6 W in that age range, but they have about 4 prospects, one of which should develop into that. 2 would be a bonus. Dubas off to a great start but needs a few more years.

He’s a real good 2C.
Gray Manns@TriesHardState

@MarkMaddenX Do you actually see him as a Crosby replacement on line 1? I just didn’t see the “difference maker” talent. Admittedly, I view everything through the prism of a fan so I don’t “know” precisely what he is.

@MarkMaddenX If Dubas gets a legit 1C this summer, does it effectively make Sid 3C? I feel like it would stunt Kindel to keep him as 3C and Sid plays that style anyway. It’d be similar to his role with Team Canada.

You need 2 elite forwards and an elite d to be your next core, ideally all 23 and under. Kindel is 5 years from his prime, so foolish to give up on him, he could be one of the three. The next core will not be elite while Sid is still here. They have the young depth, the Talbot, Orpik, Staal, Goligoski, Malone types so the core will have some support when they arrive. Best to have them develop a couple years with Crosby around.

I’d Trade Ben Kindel for a haul All season I heard the hype. That 11th overall pick hype. I think his ceiling is lower than you think. High IQ player even for his age, but I’d look to trade him for an offensive talent who’s older but still below 25.
