@NorthernSoul321 @MrBoothY6 Yes! It's somehow impossible to be an eyfs teacher and a DHT, I found! When I moved from R to N apparently I'd been demoted, according to the parents!! "Are you still the deputy?"

One thing no one prepares you for with deputy headship is quite how often people ask you when/if you’re going to become a headteacher.

@MelbourneMacs @SwailesRuth I used to see travel agents...and gently asked when was the last time the team stepped foot in a travel agency... they usually got the point! In my experience, regardless of theme, children will play with most scenarios as a home, shop, school...!

@SwailesRuth All EY staff know that ‘themed’ roleplay areas are not purposeful if our children have no experience of that situation. Build on what they know with the right enhancements and quality interactions. All about context… Grrrr to those who just don’t get it!!!

Well, it looks like role play is next in the firing line. It seems that some Ofsted inspectors (and now some consultants and advisors) are expressing preferences which appear to be very ill informed. That’ll give me something to write about in the next few weeks !

@Headteacherchat Investigate if they're doing it at home & triggers? Communication issues? Issues with teeth? Sensory needs, struggling with over stimulation? Close adult shadowing/observation if possible to try to spot subtle signs & step in, offer sensory toys, breaks, quiet place to calm.

Anonymous post: Has anyone dealt with a nursery pupil who persistently bites others, without any clear pattern or provocation? Understandably, parents are becoming increasingly concerned. Any guidance or strategies would be greatly appreciated.

@englishspecial Also, no clarity from DfE re can dictated sentences alone count as meeting the writing ELG in yrR. Seems written composition is being removed as ambition for end of R? Would love an actual answer but it is fudged everyone I get to ask.

I published a paper on handwriting and I see handwriting and pen grip issues in every single class I observe. I think it’s a sticky wicket to say ‘needs attention’ when it’s a national issue.

School achieves outcomes in line with national outcomes and yet is told ‘needs attention’ because the writing and presentation isn’t good enough.

@englishspecial Currently see a very wide gap between the physical skills of reception children and their knowledge of phonics, which they grasp reasonably well. But this means they struggle with transcription because they just don't have the ability to manipulate pencils yet.

@DanielKebedeNEU I know teachers who work as EPs, and in LA education teams who still haven't been told their 2025 pay award. Who waited over a year for 2022 and 23. No effort from the unions that represent to take it seriously. Maybe you could be vocal about #soulbury tchrs too?

I know teachers who: - Have stopped drinking water during the day because the staff toilet next to them has been broken for months. - who have an hour added to their morning routine because all but one photocopiers are broken. - are struggling to manage because most Support Staff cut. The lack of funding is sending workloads sky high and making the average day gruelling. Education is running on empty. It needs correcting at the budget.

It’s highly likely there are adults in their 30s who can still recite this because they used to demand it on an almost daily basis. What a loss. What a legacy.

Who remembers when every report had to be handwritten? One mistake meant starting over from scratch. Your handwriting needed to be both legible and flawlessly connected.

@MrBoothY6 I have just done them. Have produced some surprises. Realised one child has phonic gaps but having done the test she has great comprehension and maybe the gaps have not held her back. Reading lessons haven’t shown this to me. Also shown who independently struggle.

@lifeatthenest Whatever happened to the summer deep clean? In my day it was perfectly normal to go in around now after the deep clean. Every thing would be in the middle of the room and you would then work out your new room structure. No one complained. We just all got on with it!

@Sarah_Y_Feeney @bphillipsonMP Needs to start within Early Years, where they are often the first contact for families within our education system. But have even less resource than the next step school. Support for settings needed and LA EYFS SEN teams.

The Tories said the SEND system is “lose, lose, lose”. I agree. The difference is I’m gripping the issue. We have already restructured the Department to focus on improving inclusion in mainstream schools for children with SEND. A long way to go, but an important start.

Teacher starts teaching in 1996 and commits to that intense work every week, term, year. In 2024 someone who has never done it rocks up on this platform and constantly shames them because of professional decisions they’ve made that have always been perfectly reasonable. Wrong.

@WatchingBrief9 @EdTangled @pplmakemecrazy Knowing that self-regulation is implicit in the educational programme and a discrete Prime area ELG and therefore determines a child meeting the Good level of development outcome in the eyfsp. But you know this, I'm sure.
