One of the biggest lessons one can draw from @nelsonchamisa's UK tour is that social media is overrated. There is a huge gap between social media & brick & mortar footprints. Chamisa is clearly a collosus on the ground. Many were desperately yearning to reconnect with him! I witnessed an outpouring of genuine affection & love. There was a touching moment, a very raw one for me when a woman in her 60s & her friend made an impassioned plea to Chamisa before going on to shed tears!

We fully endorse and unequivocally associate ourselves with the principled position advanced by the Zimbabwe Council of Churches. As usual, the Council has spoken with moral courage, constitutional fidelity and prophetic clarity at a key moment in our nation’s democratic journey. The statement is a principled stance in defence of constitutionalism, the rule of law and the sovereign will of the people of Zimbabwe. We particularly associate ourselves with the Council’s reaffirmation that citizens have an inalienable constitutional right to peacefully assemble, demonstrate and petition, as guaranteed under Section 59 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe. This right is neither granted by the State nor exercised at its pleasure; it is a constitutional guarantee that lies at the heart of every democratic society. Equally important is the Council’s call upon the Government, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and all security institutions to facilitate and protect the peaceful exercise of these constitutional freedoms. The maintenance of public order must never become a justification for suppressing legitimate democratic expression or silencing citizens who seek to exercise rights expressly protected by the Constitution. Fellow citizens, constitutional democracy cannot exist where constitutional rights are selectively applied. The right to peaceful protest is not a threat to democracy. Those who choose to exercise this right peacefully must be protected, not criminalised, intimidated or subjected to arbitrary arrest. We therefore stand firmly with the Zimbabwe Council of Churches in calling for constitutional fidelity, respect for the rule of law, and the protection of the rights and freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution.

I know it’s too soon to be asking these questions. I just wanted to know why the groups that tried to stop this failed, Including a whole army general. Why didn’t they have a winning strategy? Why didn’t they mobilise people to force the government to do the right thing? Why didn’t they organise protests or guns or whatever tool of choice? I’m not asking these questions to genuine people who tried cause that’s the normal thing to do. I’m specifically referring to those who been blaming those who tried before them for not winning against the system. I personally believe anyone who tries to fight the system must be applauded regardless of the outcome. It takes courage and sacrifices. Fighting a dictatorship is not easy. Hope we learnt from this.

For now, until eventually proven otherwise, it cannot be denied that Chiwenga, a fellow Alpha male, has been thoroughly outmanoeuvred & humiliated by ED. For many years, he was lulled into a false sense of brotherhood with a vision of a shared destiny when in reality ED saw him as a pawn. As CDF, it is him that brazenly breached the Constitution to commit a coup to instil ED into office. That was neither charity nor compassion. It was blind political ambition. Most Zimbabweans hold him personally culpable for unleashing the Frankenstein Monster that ED presents - for his own selfish ends - the pursuit of power. The spotlight is now on him. Can he swallow the humiliation & escape ED's clutches? If so, for how long? If not, what viable route is at his disposal to overhaul what looks like his inevitable destiny with ignominy & irrelevance?

Hate makes people dismiss anyone without reflection. A few hours ago, you reposted the same message that Chamisa is saying, but because it was said by Madhuku, you accepted it. Now that Chamisa says it, suddenly it requires paragraphs of criticism. This disingenuous, jealous, and hateful attitude is what continues to delay Zimbabwe’s freedom.

Apart from behind the scenes dealmaking with the powers that be, since democratic space for politics as usual is closed and elections have been both constrained and deferred, what else is there? Elitist approaches only known to leaders cannot be solid as citizens-working-together solutions when they actually infantilise and reduce the citizen to a child who must wait for the paternalistic providence of a leader. It is the age of disempowerment, when leaders thrive on mystification, and the citizen entrusts forlorn hope in the paternalistic performance of elitist leaders to secure their freedom.
