There's a Korean action comedy-drama called "The Fiery Priest". It's about a Catholic priest with an uncontrollable temper who fights criminals. It's the highest-rated miniseries drama that aired on public Korean television in 2019. Highly recommended.
News@WorldVideo49043

Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in is also a devout Catholic. Catholics in South Korea enjoy a much higher reputation and social standing than Protestants (despite the fact that Protestants constitute a larger population).

@BaldwinIVofJer This is true, but there is another complimentary phenomenon that is only just beginning as the priests begin to preach the faith again: Joe pew-warmer is coming to believe. This is in its infancy but I’m seeing signs.

Nixon froze wages and prices on August 15, 1971 -- then watched the economy implode for the next decade. You can draw a straight line from that Sunday night TV announcement to the 13% inflation of 1979. Price controls create shortages. Always. Nixon's 90-day freeze became Phase II controls that lasted until 1974. Companies stopped investing because they couldn't price their products rationally. Workers got hammered as real wages collapsed (their paychecks stayed frozen while black market prices soared). The moment Nixon lifted controls in 1974, suppressed inflation exploded upward like a shaken champagne bottle. We got the worst of everything -- unemployment AND inflation -- because the price system had been destroyed for three years. Fed Chair Arthur Burns kept printing money to "support" the frozen economy, guaranteeing the disaster that followed.

Man makes a visual demonstration of how American bread is actually made Many Americans know our bread is toxic by now but they don’t really understand what the process of making it actually looks like and how bad it really is This is eye opening

The tariffs are impacting more than just manufacturing, and the blue-collar job loss has been notable across sectors compared to trend growth. If you use different trendlines in any specific sector it looks better no doubt, but the overall difference is striking.

@LHSummers @paulkrugman @AdamPosen @Markzandi @Noahpinion @scottlincicome @CatoInstitute @Chris_Griz @commonplc 8/ In fact, manufacturing employment _had_ been in steady decline. Since Liberation Day, that decline has slowed dramatically. Add in job openings for a measure of potential employment, and the turnaround is even starker. This is how the early stages of reindustrialization look.

In sum, tariffs have not worked for American workers. The sooner we replace them with a better way of raising revenue the better. But we also need to overcome our nostalgia for one particular sector and instead push economic policies for broad-based prosperity.

My @nytopinion piece discusses the failures of Trump's strategy to create manufacturing jobs--but puts it in the broader context of the previous failures to achieve this goal and why it isn't the right goal to start with.

GLP-1 drugs are the ultimate validation of the techno-solutionist approach to society's most challenging problems. The obesity crisis seemed liked it would just get worse and worse forever. Scolding from public health officials didn't work. Proposals to completely overhaul our food systems were dead on arrival. Instead, we invented a weekly shot (based on Gila monster venom!) that fixes obesity directly. And now, thanks to the economic incentives in our biomedical industry, we have follow-on drugs that will be cheaper, even more effective, and easier to administer (by taking a pill instead of a shot). Policymakers should be focused on figuring out how we can get more breakthrough drugs like GLP-1s (and faster). They also should think hard about which slopulist ideas might inadvertently kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Most people seem to understand that if the government made the retail price of apples 1 cent, people would want more apples and farmers would stop growing apples since they can’t make a profit on 1 cent apples. People seem to have trouble understanding the same principle when it comes to price controls on rent.
