SNYDER: Politicians like Trump and Putin obsessed with the past. But with version of the past that never happened. Trump and Putin like to say that in the past everything was good. But then somebody came, immigrants or Ukrainians, and took it all away. It's always same story, and that's not history. Putin is always sure what happened. It's not about evidence, it's about feeling good, it's about defining an enemy. That's why Trump and Putin hate history, in my sense of the word. They don't want historians around. They don't want history taught in schools. What they do is, and Trump does this too, they turn history instruction into moral play about how we're good and other people are bad.

The russians are committing genocide in Ukraine. To determine this, the courts are gathering converging evidence. Deportation of children, destruction of Ukrainian cultural and religious heritage, systematic targeting of schools, maternity wards, etc. All the elements are there.

As usual, pro-Russian messaging omits a key bit of context: the Russian army’s advances are now measured in meters or tens of meters per day and come at a catastrophic cost in equipment and personnel, with sustained casualties now outpacing recruitment.

An internal crisis is brewing in Russia: dissatisfaction with Putin’s policies and the course of the war is growing among the Russian elites and security forces – The Guardian.
