My late sister was a biologist who for years named her cats after viruses, which means every horrific outbreak of Ebola, Marberg, Hanta, Ippy, Lassa, or Zika brings me fond memories of her.

FIRE is deeply troubled by @UNC’s decision to condemn satire and announce an investigation into protected student expression. The @dailytarheel, which is editorially and financially independent from the university, published satirical April Fool’s articles with headlines like “Trump Orders Alcohol Law Enforcement in Chapel Hill Replaced with ICE Agents” and “UNC Brings Back DEI-For Whites.” After calls for takedowns from student groups and the student body president, the paper took the articles down and its editor-in-chief apologized. Hill After Hours, a separate registered student group, also posted and deleted a TikTok sketch satirizing a stereotypical white student walking through an area of campus where predominantly students of color have historically lived. In response, Senior Vice Provost James Orr issued a university statement condemning the satirical content and announced the university was investigating Hill After Hours. That is not the role of a public university. Students and student journalists do not lose their First Amendment rights because their speech is offensive, unpopular, or badly received. Critics are free to answer with more speech. UNC is not free to answer it with condemnation and investigation. UNC-Chapel Hill’s response also raises serious concerns under North Carolina law, which requires UNC System institutions to remain neutral on “the political controversies of the day.” A university cannot claim neutrality while taking an official side against protected student expression. UNC-Chapel Hill must retract its statement and end the investigation. Offense is not license to police protected expression.

maybe this is not yet clear, so let me state it plainly: as of right now Anthropic, and really a small number of individuals at Anthropic, has the capacity to directly attack and cause major damage to the United States Government, China, and generally global superpowers. government agencies like the NSA do not have internal models or defense capabilities that outclass frontier models. if they chose to do so, they could likely exfiltrate top secret information from government systems, gain control over critical infrastructure including military infrastructure, sabotage or modify communications between members of government at the highest level, and potentially carry on activities for some time without detection. the thing about having access to a huge number of zerodays your adversaries don't know about is it gives you a massive asymmetric advantage. they did not exploit this to gain power or destabilize the world order. they publicly released the information that they had these capabilities and worked to mitigate these flaws. you should be grateful american frontier labs have proven themselves remarkably trustworthy and concerned with the public good. but it's critical you understand we are in a new regime. private entities now have power that directly rivals and impacts the government's monopoly on influence and violence. and anthropic is certainly not the only one, there's little chance OpenAI's internal models are far behind. this trend will accelerate on virtually every dimension, not slow down. my prediction for how it plays out is the relatively imminent seizure and nationalization of labs by the US government, sometime over the next two years. it's very tough for me to see how they accept the existence of this kind of threat. but this adds a whole new class of governance issues, as then we've handed these extremely wide-reaching capabilities from private entities to public ones.

@owroot At some point we had four strollers in our NYC apartment. McLaren single, an umbrella stroller for single child subway mobility, double stroller, and a snap and go car seat stroller to get to our car park three blocks away.

The amount of gear you go through in the first year with babies is really crazy. You've got the bassinets, the swaddles, the mobiles, the teethers, the weird little seats, the swings, the bouncing contraptions etc... anything to keep them satisfied and quiet for a few moments.

Computer science professor at a major state university just finished the worst faculty meeting in 32 years of academia Department head dropped the placement statistics like a bomb at 2:47 PM on a Wednesday 2023: 89% placement rate within 6 months of graduation 2024: 67% placement rate 2025: 34% placement rate 2026 projections: 12% placement rate 312 CS majors graduating this spring. Industry contacts saying maybe 40 will find work. The dean wants to know why enrollment is still climbing while job prospects crater Faculty sitting there like deer in headlights because what the fuck do you tell 19-year-olds taking out $40k per year in loans Half the curriculum is already obsolete. Teaching data structures while companies replace entire engineering teams with Claude and Cursor. One professor suggested pivoting to "AI collaboration skills" and got laughed out of the room Another said we should warn students. Department head said that would "damage program reputation and university revenue" So they keep taking tuition money from kids who will graduate into a wasteland Career services still posts those bullshit salary averages from 2022 when new grads were getting $140k offers Now the same companies are hiring 2 senior engineers with AI tools instead of 12 junior developers Every CS professor knows their students are walking into a meat grinder But the university needs those enrollment numbers to hit budget targets They're literally selling degrees that lead to DoorDash driving

@BradMSchultz No! IIRC, in 1983 the reel included a fast break behind the back pass to Greg Stokes for a dunk in the Sweet 16 against Villanova. Been waiting a long time for another one!

To no one's surprise, Alvaro Folgueiras' game-winner against Florida made "One Shining Moment." Gotta be the first time in awhile the #Hawkeyes have been positively featured during the annual tradition.

I don’t know if this is a parenting hack that will work for other people, but charcuterie dinner always tricks my kids into eating a bunch of healthy food. I think it’s bc it’s novel and interactive and they get to eat with their hands. Subversive!

The most interesting aspect of the weapons officer rescue in Iran was CENTCOM's ability to use so many disparate personnel and capabilities in such a rapid and integrated way. They were making it up as they went along with complex tools and time critical sequences. There is a saying that bureaucracies, including militaries, are like jukeboxes. They have routines and can only play from the list. In situations like this there is no relevant record in the jukebox. You have to improvise the new tune from fragments of songs. There were so many ways to get this wrong and only a few ways to walk away with no KIA. A lot of the news focus is naturally on the machines, because that is what you can see. But someone told me years ago that air forces are not made out of planes. They are made up of people, and that is what we glimpsed here.
