As an AD, one of the biggest challenges is understanding what athletes and parents truly want. Everyone says they want to win, but too often the communication I receive is centered around why practice is being missed, why workouts can’t happen, or why the commitment isn’t possible. Winning is rarely about what happens on game day, it’s built in the unseen hours of preparation, consistency, and sacrifice. You cannot claim to want success while consistently avoiding the work required to achieve it. Too often, “we want to win” really means “we want the rewards of winning without the discomfort of earning it.” When that gap exists, the blame often shifts to the coach instead of the habits. Great programs are built when athletes, parents, and coaches all align in understanding that commitment comes before results. Wanting to win and being willing to do what it takes to win are two very different things.

Larry Brown, who played for Dean Smith at North Carolina and served as Smith's assistant for two years, is publicly calling for the school to retain Hubert Davis as coach. Here is Brown's official statement: "I understand why North Carolina fans were disappointed with our loss to VCU, but people should remember that when Caleb Wilson was healthy, this team beat Ohio State, Kansas, Duke and Virginia and Kentucky on the road. If Caleb did not get injured, this team might be in the Sweet Sixteen. I believe Hubert Davis is the type of person and coach who should continue to lead our program. We have a great recruiting class on the way, and many of the current players want to stay to play for Hubert. I call on the North Carolina administration to do the right thing and allow Hubert to continue serving as coach."

I can already hear @GaryParrishCBS screeching on his next pod with @MattNorlander .... WHY DO SCHOOLS KEEP GIVING COACHES THESE RIDICULOUS BUYOUTS????? Jerome Tang had a chance to go to Arkansas. K State should have let him go and hired someone else. Now it's stuck with having to pay him $18.7 million and making a farcical argument that some impolitic press conference remarks constitute "clause." I knew I should have gone to law school!!! Tang should get every cent he was promised. That's the way contracts are supposed to work. Maybe someday AD's will learn ... but I doubt it!
