A Russian oil tanker has broken through the US blockade on 29 March, and has entered Cuban waters, as Cuba receives fuel for the first time since January. With no authority to prevent ships from passing through international waters, despite the illegal blockade and the seizure of vessels, the US announced that it was “authorising” the Russian oil tanker to pass. Despite all the threats, Trump seems to have backed down and now says he sees no problem with sending fuel to the Caribbean country. The arrival of the oil tanker ‘Anatoly Kolodkin’, carrying 730,000 barrels of oil, is a lifeline for Cuba, but it is not enough to alleviate the suffocating pressure imposed by Washington. BREAKING: The Russian oil tanker Anatoli Kolodkin has arrived in Cuba, carrying a humanitarian shipment of roughly 100,000 metric tons of oil according to Russia’s Transportation Ministry. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said, “If a country wants to send some oil into Cuba right now, I have no problem with that.” His remarks contradicted an amendment made earlier this month to a U.S. Treasury Department waiver, which prohibited transactions involving Russian oil shipments to Cuba. Despite the amendment, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Tsivilev stated last week that Moscow would continue supplying fuel to the island, defying U.S. sanctions. Venezuela provided 35,000 barrels of oil a day to Cuba, supplying about half the country’s oil needs, but since the U.S. kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro, no fuel had reached the island since December.

Jordanian Communist Party member Omar Awad was arrested on 8 March without a warrant and is currently being held in prison without access to his lawyer or family visits. To date, no charges have been filed. An active supporter of the Palestinian cause, he has long fought for Jordanian workers.
