“YEAH SO AI THERAPY IS SO ALLURING BECAUSE IT COLLUDES WITH THE VERY DEFENSES THAT YOU’RE TRYING TO DISMANTLE! MOST OF OUR PROBLEMS ARE ULTIMATELY RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS AND WITHOUT A REAL RELATIONSHIP WITH ANOTHER HUMAN BEING YOU’RE LIKELY TO REINFORCE DEEPLY ENGRAINED PATTERNS THAT ARE NO LONGER SERVING YOU!”

Group psychotherapy provides patients an opportunity to learn how they function in groups—the roles they play, the expectations and unconscious fantasies they harbor about groups, and the obstacles they encounter in getting along with others at work and at home. Glen O. Gabbard

“People often prefer orgies of self-punishment to acknowledging wrongdoing, bearing depressive guilt or concern, and forgoing both narcissism and masochism in favour of contrition and conscience, reparative activity.” ~ Donald Carveth

I don’t like the term “post-woke” to describe the next era of a psychology and psychotherapy that retains genuine advances while correcting excesses. I want to workshop new names! Please post some ideas we can vote on it

@street_trashed In my experience it is never about the alcohol. It likely started long before that, with deep emotional, developmental and spiritual wounds, which leads to the conclusion 'I'm unhappy. I want to be happy.' These are the causes and conditions, alcohol was our best try at solving

i still remember my first "proper" drink. valentine's day 2005 when i was 14. i had come home from a walk in the dark with my ipod. saw the vodka in the kitchen. thought "it makes people happy. i want to be happy." and once i had it that was it. i liked it. then it all started.

@sbuehler I find this very interesting. Have been obsessing for a month or so about my avoidance of direct human experience. But with the compassion to know that at my current stage of treatment, a level of indirectness is vital. That's the growing edge.

One reason novice therapists w psychoanalytic leanings can “sound wise” by quoting writers, posting philosophical quips is b/c the discipline prioritizes mental understanding, concepts as a roadmap for direct experience Which does not add any real expertise in direct experience

@proud_penelope I really believe a more fruitful discussion of the limits of 'ethical core conditions' of counselling, is not how to be of most service to the already marginalised, but can we work with people we disagree with. How do we manage that c-transference/ without harming the patient.

@proud_penelope Timely, was in my group analysis experiential group thinking about this at the weekend. Position, privilege, power etc. So much for the unconscious to split and project onto. As clinicians we better grapple with these internal, unconscious biases.

🧵I’m reading about how some male clinicians here were discriminated against in grad school, based on sex. You know what would be a real asshole move? Replying in their comments #notallwomen. Or making the case that the female faculty and students who acted in this way are a

“Travel was once a means of being elsewhere, or of being nowhere. Today it is the only way we have of feeling that we are somewhere. At home, surrounded by screens, I am no longer anywhere, but rather everywhere in the world at once... To arrive in a new city is suddenly to find oneself here and nowhere else. The body rediscovers how to look. Delivered from images, it rediscovers the imagination.” — Jean Baudrillard

As I do a deep dive into the science on child anxiety, I'm becoming more and more convinced that allowing MUCH more risky play is the single most important step a parent can take to inoculate their child from debilitating current OR future anxiety. @FreeRangeKids @JonHaidt

People think suicidal men are emotionally stunted, illiterate, or "toxic"... but nothing is further from the truth. 'The wisdom of suicidal men' is an untapped resource, so often ignored and spoken over. Here, male suicide researcher, Dr Susie Bennett, shares such wisdom...

A simple rule for life that rarely fails: Optimize for enthusiasm. Make as many choices as you can that leave you feeling energetic and interested. Pay attention to when you have the urge to pursue or participate in something and do more of it.
