Nigeria will not be seeing Pope Leo during his current African tour, meaning the country’s wait for a papal visit enters its 28th year. The last papal visit was Pope John Paul II in 1998 and also in 1982. In 2025, more than 7,000 Christians were killed in Nigeria in the first 220 days. An average of 35 killings a day according to the Nigeria-based human rights groups. Nigeria accounts for roughly 72% of all Christian deaths for faith globally.

Now Trump is going after the Pope. He says "I don't want a Pope who thinks it's OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon." However, Pope Leo XIV has called for a world "free from the nuclear threat." This is gaslighting and straw-manning and everyone should be able to recognize this. Those in power need to grow a backbone and start calling it out for what it is.

Last week David Axelrod, Obama's former senior advisor and a longtime Democrat strategist met with Pope Leo XIV. Days later, Pope Leo is attacking Trump and three cardinals appeared on 60 Minutes to attack the president. I don't believe in coincidences. This is nothing more than a coordinated attack on the president of the United States by the Vatican. And quite frankly, it is both distasteful and unChristian.

@DrJohannesHartl - with all due respect, the pope ignoring the Christian slaughter of muslims in Africa just to single out Trump and say there's never a justification for war (even though just war theory came through catholic patristics) is absolutely deserving of criticism. If the pope is going to play political games, we can't demand the politicians apologize when they (rightfully) hit back. The pope criticizing trump after meeting with a top Obama advisor and ignoring muslim oppression needs to be called out.

The statements made by President Trump on Truth Social regarding the Pope were entirely inappropriate and disrespectful. They don’t contribute at all to a constructive conversation. It is the Pope’s prerogative to articulate Catholic doctrine and the principles that govern the moral life. In regard to the concrete application of those principles, people of good will can and do disagree. I would warmly recommend that serious Catholics within the Trump administration–Secretary Rubio, Vice President Vance, Ambassador Brian Burch, and others–might meet with Vatican officials so that a real dialogue can take place. This is far preferable to the statements on social media. I am very grateful for the many ways that the Trump administration has reached out to Catholics and other people of faith. It has been a high honor to serve on the Religious Liberty Commission. No President in my lifetime has shown a greater dedication to defending our first liberty. All that said, I think the President owes the Pope an apology.
