The comments under this post are filled with people who either never watched the 49ers play more than once or twice, or are so mildly interested in football that they don’t understand what they are seeing. Merriman himself has no excuse for his lack of understanding. The people angry or baffled by Wilks termination are almost exclusively casuals, fans of other teams looking to create animosity, or are click bait artists trying to get engagements. Every 49ers fan or analyst who spent time watching the team each week, looking at film, hearing the players speak day after day, had repeated moments when they knew something was wrong with this defense that went beyond stats. Wilks is an exceptional coach who was absolutely NOT getting the most out of this potentially elite defense. Shanahan knew it. The players knew it. The fans knew it. The writers covering the team knew it. And they knew it before the Super Bowl was on the horizon. The people yapping about this like it’s an outrage are completely in the dark.
