Following massive backlash over the leaked terms of Trump’s Iran negotiations, Trump is now claiming he told his team not to rush a deal because “time is on our side” — while once again attacking Obama, who actually managed to secure an Iran deal without starting a war or shutting down the Strait of Hormuz.

With a billion takes on social media and press out there already, perhaps consider here instead some helpful questions to help frame the ultimate success or failure of the Iran war (which may be a bad black/white comparison, because most conflict ends somewhat murky). So, consider the following, and I wont even give my opinion yet, given the MOU has not been signed and details not finalized, though the reaction from GOP war hawks from the leaks of the MOU is universally negative - and pls ignore the sycophantic silliness from Speaker Johnson, etc. that this is some herculean Trump diplomatic victory. So, here you go: A) Has Iran been actually thwarted in its attempt to get a nuclear weapon? This is all the marbles here, from the admin’s oft stated goals. Yes or No? B) is the Iranian regime more or less hard line now? Is IRGC now firmly entrenched across military and political sectors? C) is Iran still a threat to the US and our allies, both conventional military-ie how much ballistic missile and drone capabilities have been reduced, and asymmetric-ie terrorism and cyber? D) is the Iranian regime more firmly entrenched with expected sanctions relief? Did we actually slow the process of organic regime change, if we now provide such relief under the MOU? E) has Iran now gained a huge geo strategic card in effectively controlling the Strait of Hormuz, something that they did not have pre war? F) are our Gulf allies now going to reconsider the US as guarantor of security, and will some cut deals with Tehran? Has the strategic landscape of the Middle East changed for the better, or worse? G) most importantly (to me)-are the Iranian people better off now? Is there any hope for political change? Or has the Trump promise “help is on its way” going to be one of those awful USG betrayals that we have seen throughout our time in the region (Kurds, Syrians, Afghans….) Consider these questions, as we assess, was it all worth it? More to come on my opinions (though I think the questions are more important than my take on them)….and maybe more questions too….
