The EU’s 20th sanctions package against Russia needs to be unblocked, especially in light of the U.S. decisions to partially ease sanctions on Russian oil that is currently sitting on tankers at sea. Even this single easing by the U.S. could give Russia roughly ten billion dollars for its war. And that definitely does not help peace. Lifting the sanctions will, in any case, strengthen Russia’s position. We hear signals that this is intended to stabilize the situation, but in my view, the logic is completely different – what matters is that Russia is spending this money on weapons, primarily drones, which target Ukrainians on a massive scale. And as we already see from intelligence reports, these same drones are also used against Iran’s neighbors, countries in the Middle East, and against Europeans and Americans present at various bases there. So lifting sanctions only to end up with more drones flying at you, in my opinion, is simply not the right decision. From remarks at a joint press conference with Emmanuel Macron (3/3).

Europe and the US are connected. That much was clear. But what about the values that once held the transatlantic community together? According to Marco Rubio, international law is no longer working. That was supposed to be holding us together. Other fundamental principles - like democracy or true freedom of speech were simply not mentioned. So is it now clear that this is all about interests, not common values. And do we actually have common interests? I am not sure that Europeans see the announced civilisational decline, supposedly caused mainly by migration and deindustrialisation, as a core uniting interest. For most Europeans, the common interest is security. And according to the Secretary, Europe has to defend itself on its own, otherwise NATO looks weak. This was not a departure from the general position of the US administration. It was simply delivered in more polite terms. I am not sure the white paint will hold.

Daarom ging ik op parlementair onderzoek. De resultaten gaf ik mee aan het Nieuwsblad. Conclusie: Bij de hulpkas voor invaliditeit 7% van de leden langdurig ziek. Lager dan bij alle ziekenfondsen! Bij Solidaris maar liefst 14,3% Voorstel: laat de controle over arbeidsongeschiktheid over aan het riziv. Haal het weg bij de ziekenfondsen zoals ook in het plan @FriedaGijbels staat. Ik betreur wel dat Het Nieuwsblad als titel aanhaalt “N-VA voert de strijd tegen de ziekenfondsen op”. Ik had hen expliciet gevraagd mee te geven dat we vinden dat ziekenfondsen hier nog een rol te spelen hebben en we geen Amerikaans systeem willen. Wat eruit moet zijn de belangenconflicten: niet meer over arbeidsongeschiktheid van hun klanten oordelen, geen private verzekeringen meer aanbieden op items waarover ze tegelijk mogen beslissen over terugbetaling medische kosten en net zoals andere verzekeraars belast worden op hun activiteiten in private verzekeringen. Ik betreur ook dat men schrijft “Is dat omdat de Vlaams Nationalisten niet vertegenwoordigd zijn in de ziekenfondsen. Volgens Axel Ronse is dat niet het hele verhaal”. Hij heeft mij die vraag NIET gesteld en neen dat is helemaal niet daarom, zelf geen onderdeel van het verhaal! Wij hebben trouwens zelf uitstekende banden met bv het VNZ.

Met dit akkoord en alle hervormingen verbetert de schuldopbouw deze legislatuur al met 32 miljard euro. Op lange termijn is de impact nog veel indrukwekkender.
