Do you have #FND that affects your communication? Able to travel to the University of Technology Sydney to take part in a pilot research project looking at the use of VR in treatment of FND? Then we'd love to hear from you! redcap.link/4e76y6z

Had the pleasure of being involved in a UTS Speech podcast about #gender-affirming #voice training. It contains some great snippets from people with lived experience. Just ignore my asthmatic breathing from running to the studio and climbing the stairs 🤣 omny.fm/shows/whats-go…

@Leanne_J_R Often the stroke clients I see who have the mildest impairments are psychologically impacted the most and feel loss seemingly over and above the more severe clients. Same as when working in MND, I was amazed by how resilient the majority of clients were.

@KCMartinStone It’s a problem with Drs not yet educated well, not with people who have true FND, yet they are the ones under constant attack. Anyone misdiagnosed should be angry with their medical professionals, not people with FND. Perhaps a new name would solve many of these issues…

@CathGregorySP I’d suggest that a recently recognised disorder of neuronal connectivity is also called FND, but at the same time many, many doctors use it to mean ‘psychological,’ and as justification for withdrawing further investigation of pathophysiology. It’s a massive, very real problem.

@KCMartinStone Yes, but since the days of “hysteria”, the understanding of FND has come a long way. It is now known to be a disorder of neuronal connectivity, not “psychological”. Just because this is historically what it was labelled as, doesn’t mean research hasn’t come a long way since then.

Sorry, forgot alt text on the pic. It’s a screenshot from a medical journal article, acknowledging that the neurological condition Charcot called “l’hysterie” is today called Functional Neurological Disorder.

There is no excuse for #doctors not to take the time to familiarise themselves with current understanding of Functional Neurological Disorder, especially when it involves children and safeguarding. #MedEd #FND
KimH@KH118118

@usabilityliz @ZacharyGrinDPT @BinitaKane This does not excuse ignorance, or the widespread ongoing misrepresentation of FND. FND is being used as a pawn to the detriment of a community that has harmed by such beliefs. @BinitaKane should source her information from FND patient support charities rather than speculate.

What causes Functional Neurological Disorder? 🤷 The exact cause is unknown. In the most recent fMRI studies, patients with FND showed decreased functional connectivity in some parts of the brain compared to their healthy counterparts. Learn more 👉bit.ly/40LcUVd
