His father-in-law, Lord Dyson, is a patron of UK Lawyers for Israel. Reports also mention Hall spending family holidays in Israel and visiting Israeli counter-terrorism bodies. His strong comments on pro-Palestine marches “incubating” antisemitism, treating “demonisation of Israelis” as potential hate speech, and support for proscribing groups like Palestine Action have drawn accusations of alignment with government/pro-Israel views. The role has real operational independence (public reports, classified access, no day-to-day government control), and Hall has a track record of addressing both Islamist and far-right threats. However, as a government-appointed position with personal ties relevant to current controversies, full perceived neutrality is contested, especially on Israel/Palestine issues. This is common for such watchdogs; independence is easier to claim than to prove.
