@JonahDispatch Yeah, Jonah, it’s almost as if the Biden DOJ, deciding to prosecute a former president, and then choosing to pardon all of Biden‘s family members and political allies were bad precedents to set. Oh well, enjoy the norms.

Only thing shocking about this is how early we’re hearing this. I think ultimately nearly every senior political appointee (he thinks was loyal) at DOJ, DHS, DOD, and the West Wing will get a pardon and lots of folks lower down as well. Gonna be fun watching Vance run in ‘28 defending it all.

BREAKING: Trump promises mass pardons for his staff before leaving office. WSJ reports that in a recent meeting, Trump said he would pardon those “within 200 feet of the Oval Office.”

@ArchaeoBenjamin That's how I vote. But we know not everyone does. Since we want to defeat the Republican, wouldn't it be a good idea to let the picky voters have the candidate they're willing to vote for?

The time for candidates to earn my vote is in the PRIMARIES. When it's November & the choice is between a Democrat I'm to the left of vs Project 2025 & a Rapist Pedophile, that is NOT the time to be whining about how the Democratic candidate needs to "earn" us defeating fascism.
dead domain@DomainDead

For liberals it seems to be a genuine impossibility that politicians should have to EARN your vote instead of just being owed our fealty in a never ending billionaire class popularity contest where we have no agency.

@Rinston99 @samstein @daveweigel @Lauren_V_Egan They laid the ground work for this. They imposed a chilling effect on students who don’t want to be deported or expelled for sitting peacefully on their campus’ grass and opposing genocide. So God loves only American troops? Not innocent people who lost their lives in Iran? Where was God's "miraculous protection" for them? This is the inevitable result of believing that God is on "our side." It's making a false god in our image: a god who despises Iranians.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

☀️AM: THE LONG TAIL OF IRAN FOR THE GOP It’s unquestionable that Trump and Hill Republicans have taken a serious political hit. Trump’s conduct during the war — particularly over the last 10 days — has left deep doubts about his judgment among lawmakers in both parties. ... With less than seven months until Election Day, House Democrats seem poised to move to impeach Trump. Dozens of Democrats — more than 70 — have said Trump should be removed from office for promoting genocide after threatening to order the destruction of Iran’s civilization. ... More immediately, Democrats are going to force more war powers resolution votes. While these won’t have a practical impact, those votes also will be uncomfortable for Republicans. The White House legislative affairs team will need to expend valuable political capital while they’re also trying to get two reconciliation bills passed. punchbowl.news/archive/4826-a…

UC Berkeley just confirmed what California families already know: this state's cost of living crisis is self-inflicted. Their new report found that California has the highest cost-of-living-adjusted poverty rate in America. Not because incomes are low. Because Sacramento made everything too expensive. Housing rents 53% above the national average. Utility costs 60% higher. PG&E bills nearly doubled since 2019. Car insurance up a third in two years. Gas pushing $5 a gallon. The biggest driver? A housing shortage created by decades of Sacramento's own regulations. People aren't leaving California because they want to. They're leaving because they can't afford to stay. Since 2020, California has had the second-worst net migration rate in the country. Families, young people, seniors — all being priced out of the state they love.

@Cbejar93Bejar @adamscochran You just proved your own argument wrong, pronouns. Native Americans wouldn't be citizens under the amendment, so it took a later law to grant citizenship. By your own argument, you would need another law (an amendment in this case) to make illegal aliens citizens.

The constitution does not say they are not subject to that nation nor does it say they must only be subject to one nation. It simply says they must be subject to the jurisdiction of the US at the time of birth. Here's an easy test for that: - Does the US have the authority to arrest and detain said person? Yes. Because they are in America and subject to its jurisdiction and laws. If they are here, and subject to our jurisdiction at the time of birth - that's it, that's all the 14th amendment requires. It does not require they be devoid of any other jurisdictions or capacities.
Geiger Capital@Geiger_Capital

Justice Alito once again nails it… If a Chinese or Iranian person enters our country illegally and has a child here, their child is automatically a citizen of that foreign nation, and is even required to fight for that nation. How are they not "subject to" a foreign nation?

@acachilles10 @adamscochran This was mostly related to the Native American tribes which at the time were not subject to the US and in fact were not given birthright citizenship until much later by an act of congress.

@adamscochran If your argument were correct, there would be no reason to even say "and subject to the jurisdiction thereof". It would just say "all persons born or naturalized in the United States are citizens". You're wrong on multiple levels.

This is getting real. This isn’t some fringe blog post, this is Randy E. Barnett, a Georgetown Law professor, former prosecutor, and one of the leading originalist scholars in the country. They actually believe this. Which raises a bigger question: Will future Supreme Court nominees be vetted on this exact interpretation of the 14th Amendment? Because that’s how you change the Constitution without amending it.
