@FoodProfessor I get this made sense in the 80s/90s. When everything was done manually. The holiday season was jammed with people at stores, staff focused on keeping shelves stocked etc. In today’s retailers- one click of button- all stores get new prices overnight. Many with electronic tags

@FoodProfessor One point that gets lost- because the retailers have to deal with a large number of increases all at once- the delay and stall tactics come into play. The retailer “commodity” teams are overwhelmed in Jan and it leads to delays and massive disagreements between the two sides.

@Litatura @FoodProfessor You are so right. Take drinking milk out of the conversation for a min- the cost of milk as an ingredient is only a portion of the cost charged. The professor has talked about all the other factors within the current Canadian manufacturing industry that too many ignore.

@FoodProfessor Agree. I’d be inclined to think it was more related to the Big 3 grocery corp. profit increases rather than one industry trying to screw everyone because they have no competition. Even if we invited US milk to the party, we’d likely still be noticing these increases.

@FoodProfessor What’s happening now is in the face of the Code, retailers are refusing increases, demanding more “funding” and threatening vendors entire businesses. In my 25+ years in the grocery business- I have never felt the relationship between the two sides more at odds and strained

@FoodProfessor This is the where I would suggest that you dive deeper into the relationship between food manufacturers/ vendors and the major retailers. So many times, the price charged goes up by .05 but the price on shelf goes up by .25.
