Mad respect
Pope Respecter@poperespecter1

@Quiet_one24 What do I think? I think the interviewer clearly tried to set him up with a question about cultural identity. I think Pope Leo avoided that and talked about personal interactions with Muslims. I think people making a big deal of this are dumb.

@CatholicSmark There are problems of divisiveness imho, but the cultural elevation and transmission the SSPX facilitates among socioeconomically average people is just not seen anywhere else

@CatholicSmark Whats more, in the SSPX it is not rare (in my experience of years ago) to run across families headed by truckers or plumbers who avidly read Aquinas and whose 5+ well-behaved children can all sing Palestrina and Victoria beautifully. Really remarkable

Unironically, the SSPX and most trad parishes are heavily working class. I'm not saying just go TLM and your working class problems are solved, but it really might be worth asking why their demos skew so heavily working class despite the idea latin is for rich snobs?
Jonathan Liedl@JLLiedl

It's the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker. I good day to take stock of the Catholic Church's ongoing struggles to draw in members of the working class, but also to explore how Catholics can better serve those with a blue collar background. ncregister.com/news/catholic-…

I think Trent gets a lot of undue hate from the e-Thomist crowd but this is really sloppy. It is not a deep secret that older authorities who held delayed ensoulment still believed killing pre-human matter was egregious sin. I actually think promoting the plausibility of delayed ensoulment is a way to reach out to pro-choicers... you can reach common ground and reframe the discussion around "why it is wrong anyway" to kill what is not a human.
Trent Horn@Trent_Horn

Thomists shouldn't be mad about the line "If the unborn are not human beings, abortion is no worse than having your wisdom teeth removed". If the unborn aren't human organisms (i.e. "human beings") then they must be human tissue. But we know from modern embryology that post-fertilization human tissue that is not an organism (like a hydatiform mole) cannot develop into a human organism. In such cases, standard treatment is to remove the tissue, just like you would do with a wisdom tooth. If the unborn were (per impossible) not human beings, then removing them would neither be an act of abortion nor an act of contraception, since non-human organisms and post-fertilization human tissue cannot develop into a human organism. That means ending this substance's existence is neither murder nor contraception. Modern pro-life arguments should not be nitpicked out of misguided deference to older arguments against abortion that relied on incorrect, Aristotelian understanding of biology that did not include concepts like genetics and species membership.

Popes Francis & Leo are right that the death penalty is currently inadmissible. But, "inadmissible" does not mean intrinsically immoral. It is a judgment that there is nowhere on earth where it is needed to protect society from criminals. Me, in 2018: patheos.com/blogs/throughc…

This is a large reason dating apps fail Human attraction (specifically for women) requires repeat exposure with low stakes Dating apps do the opposite: meet once, on romantic terms, and decide immediately if it ever happens again

You've got common hyper-pickiness presenting in a religious form. Believe it or not, your real standards will plummet with age and prolonged singlehood, but your youth will be gone and there will be even fewer good mates. Consider the trap you're heading towards and do the hard work of psychologically unwindin your hyper-pickiness asap.

in a way, becoming Catholic made me basically unmarriageable. not just because of a limited dating pool but also because I actually believe in it. like I believe in submitting to my husband (with all the common sense caveats) and I believe in a commitment for life. I believe in staying home with children which would kill my career momentum and put me in a vulnerable position if I was being abused or my husband died and I had to be a provider for my kids. in my mind, those are pretty intense sacrifices.. so a man better be worth it. Most of the time, they’re not. not because they’re not decent people, but it’s cause no one is really worth it. that is why love and passion are so important to me. Maybe even more important to me compared to other Catholics that are super gung-ho on the subject of marriage. I need to be very in love because when I’m in love I’m stupid- stupid enough to get married. While it sounds insulting to insinuate that I need to be RETARDED to be a wife, I dont think it’s a bad thing at all actually.

@findveritasx On the other hand, there's a tendency among Catholics now to ignore the patristic teaching on the corruption of nature in the Fall. If you're attentive to the tradition Christianity consistently suggests a paradoxical duality

One of the biggest differences I’ve noticed between being an evangelical and a Catholic is that evangelicals strangely seem to reject that God is present in the material world. As an evangelical, the world is almost implicitly a gnostic situation where material things are essentially worthless and separate from God. All that seems to matter is the spiritual and while material things may be vessels of the devil, they are never truly vessels of God. For instance holy water, relics, a church building, even the water of baptism, these are all seen as materially worthless. All that counts is the spiritual. Even an institutional church is seen as largely unimportant as long as you are spiritually in a relationship with God. Because of this, they miss out on the fullness of faith and God. The incarnation was God stepping into our material world and redeeming it. The heavens, AND the earth are His. God can make a language, water, a building, a handkerchief, and even a human body sacred. I think this is largely why Catholic art reigns supreme. As a Catholic you see the redemption and holiness of the material world before you.

A simple proof against Annihilation: 1: God knows all things. 2: God can do all things. 3: Therefore, God can recreate any animal from any specific time based on his perfect memory of that individual creation. 4: Therefore, true Annihilation is impossible.

@junrann1 Way more Catholics need to make the effort to spend a few days or more at a serious monastery. In silence, daily reception and praying the office with the monks. The Holy Spirit will work on you and will sort you out.
