@Farawaydream_er Those worked ok because fidelity back then was low With modern fidelity you need rt to match that destruction

@Charcharo They were. I'd trade less than ideal lighting for what those brought to the table. But PT won't change much, as devs... don't care. :)

The grand Irony here is that it isnt Ray Tracing that damaged physics. It was prebaked lighting combined with PS4 / Xbox oneX generation of consoles. And ray Tracing actually can save physics and system driven gameplay in games. Plus - old games ran poorly and were demanding.
Game Or Die@GameOrDie007

Ray-Tracing had ruined and held back gaming for the last 8 years. Since then, the meager visual improvements have been met with the astronomical performance and costly hardware requirements. Tanking FPS and making games crawl. Physics were the future, and everyone dropped it for shiny puddles and lights that looks pretty much the same.

@Charcharo ironically, DOOM The Dark Ages is proof that you can still have destructible physics while retaining ray tracing [Global Illumination] at the same time. (ignore the missing audio, blame Steam Recording's audio capture setup)

@Charcharo @RichardHanania @Jebrim I don’t want Rubio either, mind you. Rubio is pro amnesty and has his own other issues too. I want Cruz, DeSantis, or Abbott. Hopefully the conservative faction of the party will unify around a single candidate so we don’t divide our vote.

JD Vance says American identity is based on Christianity. But he says Christianity must go beyond protecting life and the family. Real Christianity means 1) Fighting outsourcing 2) Restricting H1Bs 3) No taxes on Social Security, which means less money for Ukraine (?) 4) Protecting Medicaid from Somalis This is amazing. There’s no principle that unites any of this stuff. Christianity is just nativist economic illiteracy, giveaways to old people, and whatever right-wing Twitter cares about today. The Big Beautiful Bill cut Medicaid!!! By a lot more than what the Somalis took. Just in awe of Vance’s complete lack of coherence and principle. He truly is the White Kendi. But Kendism is more intellectually defensible: richardhanania.com/p/jd-vance-is-…

Read this thread and consider the following: In Ukraine at 0900 every day there is a minute of silence. Drivers will often stop. Some get out and stand still. At the recent protests, several times, the min of silence was observed while everyone took a knee, even on asphalt.

@AgileJebrim @RichardHanania @Jebrim No, I am not. I am asking hypotheticals. I know you are VERY neurodivergent so hypotheticals are hard for you but in normal person land we use those a lot.

@AgileJebrim @RichardHanania @Jebrim Lmao. Then its useless - you are de facto forever the slave to MAGA. Even the retort is insanity and lies. So functionally, you support JD Vance. Would you consider NOT voting at all then?

@Charcharo @RichardHanania @Jebrim Never because the Dems are even worse. They support nearly everything he just said here too. The only difference between him and a Dem is that he wants welfare for Americans and Dems want to include foreigners in it too. The way to oppose him is via the GOP primaries.

@AgileJebrim @RichardHanania @Jebrim This is meaningful ONLY if you'd vote democrat over him. A normal democrat. Someone like Biden or Obama or Kamala (not Hamas Piker who is just a 3rd world MAGA supporter).

@Charcharo @RichardHanania @Jebrim I disagree with pretty much every policy here that Vance advocated for in this video and I am strongly opposing him in the 2028 presidential cycle.

@Gavynb98 @Charcharo I would argue that physics were mostly damaged by the shift towards consoles as the primary development platforms during the PS4/XO era when CPUs were poorly balanced against much faster GPUs.

@Charcharo @BrickBruce67460 Nigga we've been in raytracing hell for years. I loaded up RE9, with pathtracing on, and a tiny mirror in a tiny room has massive artefacts when oldschool mirror tricks do NOT. We are spending massive amounts MORE resources to get WORSE results, objectively.

@GregoryLWright And then you have objects dynamic lighting but the rest is still... there. Like it isnt a solution bro. Dynamic is. And the easiest / best dynamic is RT.

@Charcharo And you can still add dynamic light sources. Non baked.

@GregoryLWright It doesnt. But why would a developer take a massive hit to fidelity and making things look janky or ugly (which harms sales and prestige) by letting you move these objects around?

@GregoryLWright What happens when you have a room full of props and their shadow/light data is prebaked into the room and you move the objects from the room?

@Charcharo And ray tracing has zero effect on physics. It’s a lighting model.

@RaypEatNanaya @BrickBruce67460 I would take you seriously (somewhat) ONLY if you accept that what HL2 or DOOM 3 or Crysis or RTCW or DOW or COH or SCS etcetera - is MUCH "worse" than ray tracing is. If you accept that those much MUCH MUCH more demanding games were a bigger problem, I might take you as honest.

@Totterynine Original Half Life 2 used 1 core. When Half-Life 2 launched in 2004, the Source engine was designed as a single-threaded program, relying entirely on a single CPU core to handle all the game's logic, AI, and graphics. Prebaking is shit. DOOM 3 did away with it.

@Charcharo Source Engine literally traced incoming light and wrote the result directly into the texture *on the fly* on CPU (dlight tech inherited from quake but 3x the size due to normal mapping), while running the actual game on a separate thread which includes all physics simulation too
