I’m hearing conflicting things about The Odyssey.
I don’t have the attention span for woke trash. But is it actually woke trash? Or is it worth seeing?

@michaeljknowles I thought Page as Sinon was actually brilliant. A pathetic, tiny excuse for a soldier who shouldn't be there and dies instantly. Casting a woman in that rule evokes a certain kind of pity that no man could ever copy.

What's most striking about the woke aspects of Nolan's Odyssey is not their inclusion but their magnitude. The casting isn't just colorblind; it's precisely, clinically "diverse." The actress who plays Helen isn't just black; she describes herself as "dark as night." Achilles, the most fearsome warrior in the world, is recast as another warrior played by a diminutive "trans" woman. Of all the great versions of the poem, Nolan chose the most feminist translation as his source text. It's all just so over the top.
The director who made one of the most conservative films of our time, The Dark Night, seems not just to have accepted the standards of his woke contemporaries but even to have exceeded them. It's puzzling, until one remembers the subject: Odysseus, the symbol of cunning, guile, trickery. Given the Academy's adoption of DEI requirements in 2024, has Nolan perhaps chosen not merely to depict but to imitate his hero?

The horror elements in particular were the most unexpected part. The scene where Circe turns Odysseus's men into pigs might be one of the most terrifying sequences I've ever seen on screen; masterfully executed. Made me wish Nolan would try a full horror feature next. The movie is not without its flaws, but what works does so incredibly.

I thought it was pretty good, honestly. I never got the hate for Nyong'o since she fulfills the main criteria for playing that character -- namely, being beautiful -- and is a good actress.
Page definitely rubbed me the wrong way for obvious reasons but after seeing it I think Nolan was actually pretty genius to cast her for that part. She plays a tiny, childlike soldier who immediately gets brutally murdered. We're meant to feel pity and sympathy for her and honestly the role being played by an actual man would've made it land less effectively.
Not saying that was Nolan's intent but there's a certain pathos only that actress could've brought.
