@faride_sami @nicdunz @forallcurious > darkness doesn’t have any information Ah but it does. The darkness knows what it is at all times. It knows this because it knows what it isn’t. By subtracting what it isn't from what it is, it obtains a difference, or deviation. Consequently, the information is where it wasn’t

@nicdunz @forallcurious The speed of light is actually the max speed information can travel. Darkness doesn't have any information it can tell us about the world. Darkness doesn't even have a speed you can measure, it's just nothing.

@Orionrenfield @summoningsalt Standard 2 button setup, except: If you press red, you are mangled horribly in a combine harvester, but a game theory PhD claps and weeps in awe of your wisdom. If you press blue, you must watch the movie Flubber (1997) forty consecutive times, unless >10% of people press red.

"mmmmm how can i make people who voted red not look like assholes i know i will make a stupid version of the debate and say its the same" the button debate is you have to make a choice no matter if you pick red you value your own life over others because "hey fuck people who vote blue i still live" what this train debate is "nothing happens if you don't participate"

A train is coming down a track. Everyone on Earth has the choice to either tie themselves to the track, or not. If more than 50% of people choose to tie themselves to the track, the train turns around and doesn't run them over. Yes or no - do you tie yourself to the track?

@shaulamoder “I prioritize my life over any number of strangers” is an answer, albeit antisocial. But “red’s an I Live Button, there’s only 1 button” is fundamentally not engaging in the thought experiment. Or it betrays a complete lack of consideration or intuition for others frame of mind.

@shaulamoder I’m frustrated by * Only considering their own life, as if other people dying is not part of the hypothetical and not a problem * Operating on an unshakable assumption that red wins by default * Assuming their priorities (self) are universal * Ignoring 2nd order effects entirely

all the worst people in the universe deliberately miswording the question and choosing red in the replies/quote tweets unless you value your own life more than that of billions of people as well as many of those you love, blue is the obvious answer
MrBeast@MrBeast

Everyone on earth takes a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press? BE HONEST.

@VitanNG @shaulamoder Many red advocates will do anything besides accept responsibility for the deaths that choice causes if red wins. “I value my life more than the lives of x random people” is a valid answer. Antisocial maybe, but valid. But there’s 2 buttons, not 1, both are actions.

@shaulamoder There is one button. If you press it you enter a suicide pact unless 4bn other people press it. I refuse to press the it. I value my life more than the lives of x random people. It is not my job to save them and get them out of the hole they dug themselves into by pressing it.

@MN_Vikings_Pete @Authw8 “It’s just always correct” is still logically fine, even if *you* were the oracle foreseeing the outcome of a coin flip. Causal loops are not impossible, they’re just annoying to describe and really upsetting to people that want to feel “in control” of their actions.

@Authw8 The problem is the question isn't worded well. What does "superprediction" even mean, does it mean he will ALWAYS choose correctly? Let's say I flip a coin to decide. Was the superpredictor able to predict if it would be heads or tails? Then the question is just "what if magic"

imo there's a difference between someone rejecting a premise vs their brain refusing to accept a premise. someone rejecting a premise is perfectly capable of considering the hypothetical but refusing to do so because they think the question is stupid. but sometimes someone tries in good faith to consider a thought experiment but just can't fit a certain premise into their head. it conflicts too much with their normal way of seeing things, negating too much load-bearing cognitive scaffolding
tom bombadil@Authw8

imo the problem with newcomb's problem is it mostly just tests whether you intuitively think superprediction is difficult or impossible

GitLab was designed by developers with no eye for design but think they do. The UX is atrocious as if they never used their own product. I'd let GitHub lose another 5-10% uptime before I'd consider switching to BitBucket before I'd consider GitLab.

@Nunya2161047767 @LumLotus @RazorSharpFang I think I may have the IQ of a brick, because I can’t discern any coherent pattern in that second image. Even with the answer. My only guess is it’s a couple vectors cross multiplied, where the numbers are symbolic like Mayan numerals.
