This was the Pallikaranai marshland in Sholinganallur close to Elcot on May 29, 2026. Birders said the containers were now cleared after the report of @THChennai. They said the contents in the yellow-lid containers need to be tested to see if they are toxic. Meanwhile, in many parts of this freshwater marsh, there is debris, ugarbage and open defecation menace, thaay needs to be curbed and surveillance must be added to control these issues, they said. @the_hindu @THChennai @chennaicorp

The urban regulations in India which we see today were started by the British. They infamously mentioned that "Urban planning is too important to be left to the people who live in the city" restricting Indians from making planning decisions. So, deregulation is decolonization.

Slums are not born out of income inequality. They are born out of governments distorting the housing and real estate market through excessive regulation and the centralization of power. Our mayors are largely ceremonial and often lack meaningful executive authority. This problem extends to local governments across India. Municipalities have limited control over urban planning, zoning, transportation, infrastructure, policing, land use, and even their own finances. State governments exercise direct control over many of these functions. For starters, city planning authorities such as CMDA, MMRDA, HMDA, and similar agencies are controlled by state governments. These institutions trace their origins to a colonial model that concentrated planning authority away from local governments. Why are we still following this approach? Regulations such as FSI/FAR limits, setback requirements, road-width mandates, parking requirements, and countless other planning rules are imposed by these centralized agencies rather than by the municipalities that are closest to local conditions. Then there is RERA. What is the purpose of adding yet another layer of centralization and regulation? Every approval, permit, and compliance requirement creates opportunities for delays, rent-seeking, and bribery. Each additional regulation adds costs that are ultimately passed on to homebuyers and renters, making cities increasingly unaffordable. A city is not just a place to live. It is primarily a labor market. The efficiency of that market is determined by how quickly and easily workers can connect with employers. Restrictive planning regulations limit housing supply, force cities to sprawl outward, increase commuting times, and push the most vulnerable people into informal settlements and slums closer to economic opportunity. Local governments in India lack many of the powers that cities around the world take for granted. They cannot freely determine land-use policy, approve major developments, raise significant revenue, expand infrastructure, or shape the long-term growth of their cities without state-level intervention. Yet they are expected to manage the consequences of rapid urbanization. If we want affordable housing, productive cities, and fewer slums, the solution is not more regulation and centralization. It is devolving power, liberalizing land-use rules, and allowing cities to govern themselves. Free the cities from state control.

How about eliminating capital gains taxes for both foreign and domestic investors🤡? It's one of the stupidest taxes to impose in the first place.

@vdsatheesan Get rid of the destructive land ceiling laws and the Paddy Land Act. Don't waste this crisis. Use it to bring big bang reforms en masse. Learn from what @JMilei did with RIGI.

China liberalized its economy in 1978 & India in 1991. This 13 year gap accounts for 60-70% of the GDP gap. The rest is explained by the fact that India didn't liberalize its manufacturing & agriculture in 91. Our socialist land laws are still in the stone age unlike China.

@sekar_vembu "The urge to “save” people is too often just a mask for the urge to rule them". Sir you have perfectly summed up Indian politics in a single line!

I agree with almost everything you said. Indian politics is indeed dominated by the pursuit of power and wealth, and the ethical lines do blur once someone tastes real authority. H.L. Mencken’s quote is spot on: the urge to “save” people is too often just a mask for the urge to rule them. That is why my profile bio says "I am suspicious of anyone who wants to save the world". I fully relate to what you said about politics requiring a combination of tact, being selfish, cunning and conniving. That is exactly why people with impeccable integrity and an incorruptible moral compass cannot survive in today’s political system. It is another strong reason I prefer ultra-minimal government, where politicians become largely irrelevant in daily life. That is also why I am deeply sceptical of big government and hero-worship in any form. In fact, philosophically I believe in what is called anarcho-capitalism, a no-government society. This is why my appeal to Annamalai is not to become another "messiah", but the opposite. Train leaders who understand their job is to become invisible and irrelevant in people’s daily lives. The more power a politician seeks, the more dangerous he becomes. That is why the only safe path is ultra-minimal government limited strictly to law and order, justice, and basic amenities, while everything else is left to free producers and citizens. The real test will be whether he builds a movement that keeps even him accountable and prevents the usual slide into power politics. I am watching with the same healthy scepticism you describe. No blind support for anyone. Curious to see this evolution too. Appreciate the honest perspective.

Indian politics has lost its integrity. People enter politics with the sole intention of amassing wealth. And they never stop after making enough for multiple future generations to sit and do nothing. Because, the degree of greed increases, as your wealth increases. No one enters politics with the sole intention of serving society. It is always about power. To be in a position where you feel invincible. As H.L. Mencken famously said, The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it. Power is what all messiahs really seek: not the chance to serve. This is true even of the pious brethren who carry the gospel to foreign parts. Outliers exist, and Annamalai avargal is one of those outliers. I see in him what I see in me. A clear understanding of one’s own moral compass, and an uncompromising approach to delivering justice. But, that’s Annamalai the civil servant who is yet to taste power as a politician. Annamalai is a straight arrow. I love that about him. But success in politics doesn’t come from being a straight arrow. A straight arrow can be an activist, but politics is using a combination of tact, being selfish, cunning, conniving , diplomatic, empathetic, and knowing when to cut ties and when to build bridges. Knowing that, your decisions will be good for some people and bad for some people, but the decision has to be taken, because the decision serves a greater purpose, the nation. There will come a point, where Annamalai will have to choose between right or wrong. The more powerful you get, the more blurred the lines between right or wrong becomes. It an an ethical conundrum that plagues people like me. If it plagues you, then politics is not for you. If it doesn’t affect you, and you still go through with it, then you have the chops to thrive as a politician and become a statesman. The path to prosperity of a nation is muddled. Curious to see Annamalai’s evolution from here on.

As Libertarians, we are focused on minimizing Government control and maximizing individual liberty. The first step towards achieving that is decentralization - to shift power from distant bureaucracies to our local Government. We are focused on implementing the article 73 & 74 of our constitution in practice, not just in paper by giving panchayats and municipalities more fiscal and administrative autonomy. Potholes, flooding, garbage mismanagement and water scarcity problems in Chennai can only be solved by empowering municipals, mayors and ward councils. We deserve leaders who answer to ourselves first, not distant bureaucrats.
