@katherineortho There are record converts but the Catholic and other Christian churches have been in decline for years. It’s staunching the bleeding but there is still plenty of room to shift from net decline to net increase.

@lajerick1 @AlexDuncanTX To remind ourselves daily of how he suffered for us and that we should show the same sacrificial love to others. Catholics do have crosses without Jesus as well as a reminder of his resurrection and power.

@AlexDuncanTX Why do Catholics still have Jesus hanging on the cross on every crucifix as if His sacrifice is not finished when He clearly said on the cross it was finished. Just as the tomb was empty, so should the cross be empty. We worship a risen Christ.

Yes. I have to say I am most disturbed by some of the traditionalist since returning to the Catholic faith. (Not all but some). They remind me very much of the rabid Calvinists that I left behind. Lots of self righteousness but very little charity for others. It’s not a good look. I myself prefer a more traditional mass and hold closely to those beliefs, but I’m not going to sneer at others who feel otherwise or don’t know better but are faithfully and honestly seeking Christ and the spread of his gospel. As for the running mass, could some of them have worn more modest running clothes? Sure. I’d rather have them at mass than not attend because they are self conscious about their outfit. I think the priest could have done a better job of explaining appropriately modest race-ware for the service beforehand, but I’m glad they didn’t skip mass and glad for their outreach and love for the community.

@BreeSolstad @alexathallow I see a group that is trying to spread the word of God and turn the country to faith. Imperfectly? Sure, but true of us all. Then, I see all these comments shaming people for showing up to a pre-marathon Mass in (shocker) running clothes. I'm sick of the sneering.

What the heck was Hallow doing paying that Neeza dude money anyway? The complete lack of discernment at that money-first corporate prayer outlet is once again on full display. They’ll do anything for more subs & clicks. It’s anti-Gospel. Yes @alexathallow, I’m looking at you:

You must be very naive to how nonprofits work. They can just as easily make those affiliated with them a lot of money through salaries, bonuses, speaking fees, and “donations” to other affiliated organizations. There are many examples of this. Such as AARP, NRA, etc. Just because halow is a for profit company doesn’t make it evil or “money over holiness.” Every subscriber is someone who is praying more than they were and are exposed to the Catholic faith when they wouldn’t have been otherwise. Hallow was the first step on my journey back to the Catholic faith after 30 years and in part led to my confirmation at this year’s Easter vigil. What a horrible thing Hallow was partly responsible for! I can asure you I’m not the only one blessed in this way by the Hallow app. None are perfect or without sin but those at Hallow are doing a great work for the gospel and the Catholic Church. I for one am glad for their effort flawed or not.

Is it just me or wouldn’t any group consecrating their own bishops outside of papal authority be excommunicated? Liberal, middle of the road, or conservative. Why does SSPX think this shouldn’t apply to them? Aren’t there other organizations in the Catholic Church without their own bishops? Why do they need their own special bishops?

We're grateful that Bishop Fellay warned the members of the SSPX that they'll probably be excommunicated after the July 1 consecrations. It's time for his followers to leave the SSPX and rejoin the Catholic Church, because they will be risking eternal damnation if they don't. Fellay's warning shows that he accepts the authority of Rome to excommunicate. If that's the case, why doesn't Fellay accept the pope's authority without reservation and call off the consecrations?
John-Henry Westen@JhWesten

🚨 Bishop Bernard Fellay of the SSPX delivered a stark warning in his April 19 homily in Kansas: “There is an enormous probability that all of you — we included of course — may be excommunicated… There is a very high probability because they already said it in public so they are forcing themselves to do it.” Yet he adds: “Whatever — God can do miracles. It’s not the end.” God wants the SSPX to remain “a sign of contradiction… the Cross.” Watch the full clip:

Any state that hands down a legitimate capital judgment for murder is justified by God to do so, yes. Not one of the murder victims was given a chance for redemption before being murdered. That opportunity is given to every inmate on death row before execution. The individual is called to forgive. The state is called to enforce justice. Forgiveness does not negate criminal penalties. If an irrevocable life sentence in solitary confinement without parole cannot be guaranteed worldwide for murder then a worldwide prohibition against capital punishment is invalid. That is the circumstance that the current prohibition implies exists. It does not.

@ChrisB3889 @FrMatthewLC All states? So every state that commits capital murder is justified by GOD, that is your position? When Saul is converted by JESUS, is he not saying ALL of us can be redeemed, not only redeemed, but into the greatest amongst us? Should we not forgive 700x7 times?

Popes Francis & Leo are right that the death penalty is currently inadmissible. But, "inadmissible" does not mean intrinsically immoral. It is a judgment that there is nowhere on earth where it is needed to protect society from criminals. Me, in 2018: patheos.com/blogs/throughc…

Then I guess I’m just thoroughly confused. You respond to a post about modesty (albeit a clickbaity one). Then you repost and call out people who would like to see more modest dress in church. I agree that some, maybe even most were rude about it. Then you use the word modesty in your post calling the commenters hypocrites in a sort of passive aggressive way but that’s not what it’s about? I guess you are calling out anyone who believes in modest dress as judgmental and that is your main point? The concern of the op’s post however is modesty. So…

Seeing the responses to this post of mine has been eye-opening. First, my post is responding to a rage-baiting engagement farming, religious influencing account. Second, how many of you who are shrieking about modesty are the same who speak out against Muslims and the hijab?
Fr. Chris Vorderbruggen@FatherChrisVor1

Christians, hear me: if you come to Mass or prayer and spend it judging others, what they wear or why they came, then in my judgment it would be better not to come. Pray, fast, examine your conscience, and return prepared rather than stand there with that in your heart.

Oh I agree the internet is largely a cesspool and you are completely right about the op and his engagement farming no context posting. It’s a disgrace. My opinion is there is room for encouraging modesty and extending some grace in unusual circumstances. I think the idea of the special mass was excellent but some better preliminary instruction could have been given on appropriate sportswear. There are plenty of long sleeve/pant style trainers that are worn over race gear until just before a race that would have been more appropriate than tight leggings and short shorts. It’s not just church. I can’t go to the gym without seeing some woman in leggings so tight that her privates are clearly visible through them. Something is wrong with a society that deems that appropriate for any location!

@jarldietrich I guess he should have just let the kid bean him with the soccer ball? While it’s not ideal to be doing this in vestments, I’d give him a little grace. Should priests not greet parishioners in vestments after mass either? They are all in trouble in that circumstance.

@FatherChrisVor1 You accused those who expressed concern for modesty of being hypocritical bigots towards Muslims (in a polite tone). I am pointing out that criticism of Islam is not bigotry or hypocritical. It is necessary for the salvation of the lost.

It is still in error on inadmissibility. The idea that a murderer can safely be imprisoned for life without exception worldwide is laughable on its face. They are often paroled or have sentences reduced by liberal judges and parole boards and murder again. They also have been known to murder other inmates while in prison for murder.

The death penalty question is back in the air, ever since Leo XIV doubled down on the error of his predecessor. No, the death penalty is NOT "inadmissible." It is NOT "per se contrary to human dignity and the Gospel." It is admissible. It is permissible. It is sometimes warranted. It is sometimes even necessary for the preservation of the common good. All this is clear from Scripture, Tradition, and the solemn, perennial Magisterium of the Church. The *only* issue that can be debated is whether it is prudentially right in this or that situation or context. For a quick overview of why this is the only coherent position a Catholic can take, see the lecture linked here, given in 2019, and the shorter article from 2023. Of course, the literature is vast; Ed Feser's work is particularly commendable for its careful attention to both argument and authority. We do not. If we did there would never be a case of a convicted murder being released or escaping and murdering again. His logic is flawed. God also clearly grants the state the right to use capital punishment in scripture for much broader reasons than murder. So “detaining someone safely for life” cannot be argued as a reason why capital punishment is wrong. We are much more lenient than even God would require when it comes to when capital punishment is used as a valid punishment. If God were concerned about a murderer living out their entire natural life then another punishment would have been prescribed for murder, such as removing of hands or permanent servitude. Jail was never the punishment for a crime. It was usually making just compensation for the loss to the victim. Be that paying for stolen livestock or whatever. Life cannot be justly compensated for by any other means than the forfeiture of the life of the murderer.

@DrKwasniewski Clearly you didn’t actually read his statement. His reason for saying it is inadmissible is because we have means to safely and humanely detain people for life.

God gives the authority to the state in scripture to administer capital punishment and in many more circumstances than it is used today. There is no cogent argument that supports the idea that it isn’t valid punishment for taking the life of an innocent. To say that jails are better today than in the past is what is often used. That is not a valid argument. It is not true worldwide and life sentences are often vacated or paroled early only for the criminals to kill again. Until that circumstance is impossible the death penalty for murder and I would include serious cases of aggravated rape is valid.

@FrMatthewLC Not disagreeing, but, who amongst us has the authority to destroy GODs creation? Who amongst us has the authority, to decide the end of ones redemption? Does JESUS want all of us? Do we invoke the death penalty out of fear, or justice? When will this justice prevail?
