I said I wouldn’t talk about immigration today, so I’ll try to say something more generally, which is that increasingly what I notice as a big, important difference between liberals and conservatives is the extent to which each group believes that an individual or group of people can be in any sense “good“ and moral while preferring to be left alone and focused only on themselves. To me it’s self-evidently not only fine for an individual, or family, or clan, or country to prefer to keep to itself, take care of itself, but that this is in fact noble, admirable, and often desirable. Self-sufficiency, self-directedness, and quiet, individual competency are positive traits that if mimicked widely would produce a utopia. Liberals suppose a litany of additional obligations that I find neither convincing nor attractive.
