A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would be an immediate threat to all neighboring democracies.

Every Taiwanese attempt at proclaiming independence has been shot down by the US, who recognizes the One China policy. The maintenance of the strategic ambiguity is a policy to contain the expansion of communism. So yes, it is meddling and nothing to do with a supposed alliance.
