I am not trying to make my Catholic friends, who I love, angry with this statement. But this entire episode is starting to explain to me why so many Americans were concerned about a Catholic president for so long. I have no interest in Rome trying to dictate American policy. And if it continues to loudly make its opinions heard on our foreign policy, I believe they’re going to find a lot of American Protestants feeling a lot less ecumenical than we have been in the more recent past.

Pope Leo XIV explicitly rejected claims that God justifies war — a direct rebuke of Operation Epic Fury's framing. That's not Rome "dictating to governments," that is a religious leader doing exactly what religious leaders are constitutionally protected to do under the First Amendment. A Church that stays silent while the innocent burn isn't holy — it's complicit.

So God loves only American troops? Not innocent people who lost their lives in Iran? Where was God's "miraculous protection" for them? This is the inevitable result of believing that God is on "our side." It's making a false god in our image: a god who despises Iranians.

@DSPetolicchio That’s far harsher than the Catholic Church ever weighed in on Nazi Germany.

In January, behind closed doors at the Pentagon, Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby summoned Cardinal Christophe Pierre — Pope Leo XIV’s then-ambassador to the United States — and delivered a lecture. America, Colby and his colleagues told the cardinal, has the military power to do whatever it wants in the world. The Catholic Church had better take its side. As tempers rose, one U.S. official reached for a fourteenth-century weapon and invoked the Avignon Papacy, the period when the French Crown used military force to bend the bishop of Rome to its will. That scene, broken this week by Mattia Ferraresi in an extraordinary piece of journalism for The Free Press, may be the most remarkable moment in the long and knotted history of the American republic’s relationship with the Catholic Church. substack.com/home/post/p-19…

Respectfully, If he loses midterms it’s because of a bunch of spoiled infants. They want to punish him because of Israel. They’re the ones moaning and getting into bed with the left.
