@SirBylHolte I find it telling when folks get really upset about story characters being portrayed in different tellings. It seems such a strange thing to me. The skin color, gender, or species of characters is usually irrelevant to the story. If relevant, it becomes part of this told story.

@NolanAnalyst White supremacists reveal themselves by their ignorance of the import of the Kingdom of Ethiopia throughout the Ancient world from the time of Solomon through the 9th century AD. Clearly important as the delegation from Ethiopia is the Bible’s way of showing Solomon’s importance

@elonmusk So I’m guessing you are unfamiliar with the Kingdom of Ethiopia which was a major trade player throughout the ancient world from the time of King Solomon of Israel through the Roman Empire. There were rich Ethiopian merchants, diplomats, & nobility doing business in Greece too.

@WhiteHouse The nation is in decline because we hold each other in contempt. It isn’t Republicans or Democrats, rather it is hard hearts & stiff necks that bring down civilizations. We can come back through reasonable bipartisan compromise solutions.

We will fully fund both border security and immigration enforcement for the balance of President Trump's term.   We're going do this for two reasons: maintaining border security and deporting dangerous criminal illegal aliens is the baseline that the American people demand and deserve, and because there's not a single Democrat in Congress — House or Senate — who believes that border security and immigration enforcement should exist.

Republicans are laser focused. We don't look to the right or the left — we charge straightforward.    Republicans are for COMMON SENSE, and Democrats are for crazy. It's as simple as that, and we're going to continue reminding the American people of this every single day.

@WhiteHouse My biggest critique of reelecting DJT was the lack of professionalism, decorum, respect, & planning. Carelessly “winging it” in complex situations that need comprehensive strategy with precise selection of high value targets, & careful logistical planning to meet goals.

In October 1772, an eighteen-year-old enslaved woman was brought before a panel of eighteen of the most powerful men in Boston. The governor was there. The lieutenant governor. John Hancock. Seven ministers. Several Harvard graduates. Their task was to determine whether a Black woman could have written poetry. Phillis Wheatley answered their questions, demonstrated her knowledge of Latin and Greek, recited her verses. She proved what they did not want to believe. They signed a document attesting to her genius, and the following year, she became the first African American to publish a book of poems. She had been kidnapped from West Africa around the age of seven. The slave ship that carried her across the Atlantic was called The Phillis -- and that became her name. When she arrived in Boston in 1761, she was purchased by John and Susanna Wheatley, a merchant and his wife, who put her to work as a domestic servant. But they soon noticed something extraordinary. Within sixteen months, the child could read the Bible. Within a few years, she was reading Latin and Greek, translating Ovid, studying astronomy and geography. Susanna's daughter Mary, the same age as Phillis, became her tutor, and the family, recognizing her gifts, excused her from most household labor and encouraged her to write. By fourteen, she had published her first poem. By seventeen, her elegy for the famous minister George Whitefield had made her name known across the colonies and in England. She was a prodigy -- and a paradox. An enslaved woman writing verse in the language of her captors. A poet who had to prove she was human before she could prove she was good. That was the purpose of the 1772 examination. No American publisher would print her work -- they refused to believe an enslaved Black woman was capable of such poetry. So she was brought before Boston's elite to be tested. "She passed with flying colors," the historian Henry Louis Gates Jr. later wrote. The eighteen men signed an attestation, included in the preface of her book, certifying that the poems "were written by Phillis, a young Negro Girl, who was but a few Years since, brought an uncultivated Barbarian from Africa." In 1773, Wheatley traveled to London with the Wheatleys' son. She was celebrated there -- invited to meet the Lord Mayor, praised by aristocrats, funded by the Countess of Huntingdon. An audience with King George III was arranged, though she returned to Boston before it could take place. She wrote to a friend about the "unexpected and unmerited civility" she had received. Her book, "Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral," was published in London that September. She became, in the words of one scholar, "the most famous African on the face of the earth." Shortly after, she was emancipated. Some historians believe she made her freedom a condition of returning from England. But freedom did not mean ease. The Wheatleys who had supported her died within a few years, and she was on her own -- a free Black woman in Revolutionary Boston, trying to support herself with her pen. In 1774, she published a letter to the Reverend Samson Occom, a Mohegan minister and fellow advocate for the rights of Black and Indigenous people. It was her clearest condemnation of slavery: "In every human Breast, God has implanted a Principle, which we call Love of Freedom; it is impatient of Oppression, and pants for Deliverance." Two years later, she wrote a poem praising George Washington's appointment as commander of the Continental Army. He replied with admiration -- and an invitation. "If you should ever come to Cambridge, or near Head Quarters," Washington wrote, "I shall be happy to see a person so favour'd by the Muses." Some historians believe she accepted. We do not know for certain. © A Mighty Girl #archaeohistories
