@SamLee Size has nothing to do with ability to hit a ball into a wide open space. And if he doesn’t have the skill, he probably shouldn’t be out there. I think a majority of players in the World Cup can play that ball in.

@RobUsry I’m good with up to the round of 8. From here, we need the elites to advance unless it’s USMNT involved

@NormalGuy3090 @IlariLehti @StevenMcinerney I’m not intellectually challenged. If you don’t watch outside of the World Cup then you wouldn’t know that the way that rule was applied in the Argentina game was not the way it is frequently applied across the club space. You don’t belong in the convo by self-admission 😂

@CoachJMort @IlariLehti @StevenMcinerney I commented not on my enjoyment. I'm interpreting the rules as written for some of the more intellectually challenged here. I never watch football outside of the world cup and that show about Wrexham.

Genuinely only just watched the Argentina Egypt highlights and I was expecting to see some mad controversial stuff based on the noise on here. Was never a pen in a million years on Salah. The callback for the disallowed goal was frustrating, sure, but it was obviously a foul. It was on Egypt for bottling it tbh.

@IlariLehti @CoachJMort @StevenMcinerney It's not a bizarre rule and makes perfect sense. If a team gained an advantage because of a foul during a certain phase of play and scored a goal potentially because of that, it's perfectly reasonable to check that foul.

@ariel_arielg @NormalGuy3090 @StevenMcinerney I know it’s not the first time 🤣 I watch footy all the time. I’m saying because it’s not the first time, VAR has done more to hurt the game than help the game in my opinion. It damages the viewing experience & they don’t even always get it right.

@NormalGuy3090 @StevenMcinerney My goal posts are the same. VAR is bollocks and should be out of the game. A foul 20 seconds before a goal on the complete other end of the field is not what VAR was intended for.

@CoachJMort @StevenMcinerney You shifted the goal posts. First you said the distance from the foul was the problem. Now you're arguing phase of play shouldn't be used. The review happend at the conclusion of the ongoing phase of play. Phase of play is differnt from one specific play.

@NormalGuy3090 @StevenMcinerney I don’t think phase of play is specific to that team’s duration of possession. I’ve seen in the prem many times that teams do have a foul in the build up but enough time passed to where it wasn’t deemed “in the lead up to goal.”

@CoachJMort @StevenMcinerney You don't know what "phase of play" means. It means, in this case, that Egypt was attacking that whole time. The rule states to let that phase conclude before reviewing. It's written like that in case the foul is against the attacking team. I'm just telling you the rule.

@NormalGuy3090 @StevenMcinerney There were 18 seconds between the foul at the other end of the pitch and the goal. If that’s what we’re using VAR for, game is in shambles. A common foul on the opposite touchline. We should VAR every common foul from now on. Re-referee every action.

@StevenMcinerney A common foul 90 yards from the goal in which Argentina had *plenty* of chances to stop the build from Egypt is not what VAR was intended for - full stop. We need VAR out asap

I genuinely wish everything in football (and life) would stop being so dramatic. It's exhausting man. Can we just stop pretending that everything is the biggest deal ever. There's a lot of emotional range between incredibly nonplussed and extremely outraged. Can people start exploring that middle ground again. It'd be nice.

@dsfreem @AdmiralBear01 Sure. I don’t mean regressed to be demeaning. We were a total outlier of a team and program for years. We have regressed back towards average, while still being in the upper echelon of women’s footy. But we won world cups because we were ahead of the curve on the women’s side.

@CoachJMort @AdmiralBear01 You say regressing while I’d say the rest of the world improving is a natural result of the expansion of the game. Like in basketball - the Dream Team may be the best team assembled but what the 2024 olympic team did in winning gold was much much harder

We always talk about the nature of youth soccer as the reason why USMNT isn't more competitive, but American girls play in the same damn system and win World Cups. The issue is simple: Our best athletes can make way more money learning and playing other sports, so they do.
Dr. Nirav Pandya, M.D.@DrNiravPandya

There are going to be multiple talking points about how the USMNT can enter the next tier of soccer over the upcoming weeks. A lot has to do with the current youth club system. It's expensive, a ton of kids drop out at a young age, and longitudinal development is forgotten

FIFA's own rulebook: there is NO mechanism to appeal a red card at the World Cup. Also FIFA, 4 days later: the host nation's star striker's ban is "suspended," he'll play the Round of 16. A rule that doesn't exist for everyone else appears out of thin air for the USA. If red cards can vanish for the right team, they mean nothing.
Adam Crafton@AdamCrafton_

BREAKING @TheAthleticFC Folarin Balogun will be available to play the USMNT’s round of 16 match against Belgium with his one-game red-card ban suspended. Extraordinary development. Story with @Dan_Sheldon_ nytimes.com/athletic/74234…
