It is the job of the official to check the sideline for a timeout after a made basket. Coaches absolutely should be allowed to call timeouts. Simple task from the ref, he just goofed it.

Some thoughts on the epic end of regulation in Kentucky-Santa Clara: 1. Herb Sendek was trying to call time out but the refs didn't see it. This is why I do NOT like the rule allowing coaches to call time out. Do you want refs looking at the bench or the court? That rule went away a few years ago but the coaches wanted it back. Get rid of it! 2. There's still some debate over whether fouling up three is the right strategy, but the evidence is quite clear. Fouling up three with under five seconds to play pretty much doubles your chances of avoiding overtime. No strategy is perfect but it is the right thing to do! 3. That said, it's hard to execute that in a scramble like in this case. Don't always assume the players know how many points they're up in that situation! Lots going on and they're not all totally locked in. Happens more than you think. So the question is what have you practiced for? What's your policy? They need to be properly trained for when the moment comes, whatever you decide. 4. At the end of the day, it was a crazy, halfcourt, banked in shot. Hoop happens! And so Otega Oweh shot himself forever into NCAA Tournament lore. Somewhere Cawood Ledford is smiling!

Sticking to one profile of player for a position is so dogmatic. Trent is atypical, sure. But that’s one reason it would be great to have him in the squad, because he can disrupt in a way that few others can. That’s such a big miss for the sake of adhering to a system.

@J_Blagden Yes why he should also be a top 5 candidate. Winning matters. So does stats. So does one’s value on their team. It’s not one factor over the other but it seems like we are using team success as the most important metric these days for individual accolades.

MVP literally means most valuable player. OKC without SGA would still be top 6 team. Lakers without Luka would be a play in team at best. Idk how you can make the argument SGA is more valuable to his team. I understand you want to reward winning but the NBA has lost the plot here

@_JasonLT I’m yet to see anyone discuss how bad Garza is guarding that ball screen. Just say you don’t appreciate offensive craft. Beat the hedge, turned down hill, stops on a dime to pull up with clear illegal contact from Garza. Yall just wanna make a story - story is Garza’s slow feet.

This take should be universally approved, but the player stans can’t see the forest for the trees.
This goes for all the grifters. Shai, Luka, Brunson, etc. Everyone knows damn well it sucks to watch and is bad for the game.

You can hear Jaylen yell “that’s not basketball.” He’s right. A bunch of stars have adopted this specific “drive hard left, draw contact on a semi-impossible shot, then flail” move and it keeps working. Refs have to stop calling it. It sucks to watch.

@ColinKeane_ The onus is on the defender to not get beat off the hedge. He was late to get level with the ball, didn’t stop Shai from going downhill, and clearly gets into his body in an attempt to recover. Slow feet don’t eat on that end of the floor.

Not totally down with this take.
SGA deserves blame. Just because you're good at using a cheat code doesn't mean you should use it.
Honor and respect for the game matter.
If someone drops a $100 bill on the floor, no one would hate you for pocketing it. But you're still less honorable than the person who gives it back.

Jaylen Brown is right: That’s not basketball. But I can’t blame SGA for it. I blame the referees and the league itself for rewarding this behavior. It should not be a foul. Defenders should be allowed to play defense. Marginal contact like this should not draw a whistle. Play on.

It's pretty simple. Shai is a star with irregular movement patterns who has mastered the art of the flop and flail to trick referees. On defense, they hack a half dozen times on every possession, relying on human nature for refs to not want to call a foul on every possession.

I want everyone that says the thunder get an unfair whistle to actually try and explain why that is happening in their minds. If you have a legit reasoning I’d love to hear it, if not you should have to say with your chest you think the league is rigging play for the OKC Thunder

@NBACouchside If this is true, why don’t other teams try playing more physical and fouling more knowing the human nature of officials? NBA teams will do ANYTHING for a leg up. So why don’t they start fouling more too?

@kerrywilliams_ @ClaytonHale3 This is pretty normal stuff in college and pro hoops because of the length of timeouts. Coaches step away as a group and discuss, allow the players to rest / discuss amongst themselves, and then coach enters the huddle and talks actionable items. Nothing odd about this at all.

@ReedCarringer I think it’s more that Tennessee can’t solve itself. Turnovers, FTs, 5+ min spans of looking totally lost on offense. Didn’t make a 3FG in the second half of a modern basketball game.
