🗣️ You MUST lift in-season… you wanted context, so let’s talk about it! 🔑 Read the below… change how you look at in-season training 1️⃣ “I don’t want to be sore.” Understand context. Understand protocol that can be taken in a GOOD program by a GOOD coach who can have you work in a way that gets or maintains results without frying you!! Sub-maximal strength work, isometrics, limited sprint volume. All work 2️⃣ “I don’t have time. I have games or practices 5x per week.” Please keep your two off days as off days. Big hack? Do speed or jump work before games or practices to prime you to be ready to go! Do sub max strength work after games or practices. You’ll already be warmed up AND odds are the sub max lifting will be less intense than sport so it’ll actually be a cool down of sorts 3️⃣ “Why lift after games or practices?” It’s simple. While you may think you’re better off not doing too much on one day, it’s actually better to stack higher intensities on the same days so you can use days you’re off from your sport to be COMPLETE rest days 4️⃣ “I’ll get hurt from doing too much.” Again, moderation & quality programming are keys here. A good program will actually HELP you stay resilient, avoid burnout & counter the high amounts of reps you’re getting in your sport as a way to stay strong & healthy 5️⃣ “Why can’t I just wait until the off-season?” Of course you can. But let me ask you this. The in-season is probably the biggest chunk of time you have in your year. Can you really afford to NOT train for several months? You’ll start your off-season just building back to what you were vs. Improving. Then you’ll lose it all again come in-season 🤦‍♂️ 🔑 Read the above… change how you look at in-season training

I’ve been critical of a lot of tackling videos on here, but this by far is the worst offender… I’m am all for TOUGH GUYS and being ANTI-FRAGILE but this is not it. It’s bad for players and bad for the game. This is the way a lot of old timers like myself learned to tackle, but it’s not sustainable and sooner or later it will (did) catch up with you. The issue we have now is that we have over corrected in the way the majority of tackling is being taught. The emphasis on eliminating the use of the head and helmet is a GOOD thing but many of the techniques we are teaching are confusing and counter intuitive to how tackling actually works. There is sweet spot to hit, but 1st we need to understand and come to a real definition of what good tackling is, what works and how to be more effective and teaching it.

NEW: SEMO football showcased a drill that is complete stupidity. This is EXACTLY how players end up getting hurt for no reason… 🤦‍♂️

I am constantly reminded in coaching that experience doesn’t equal expertise without consistent pursuit of growth and seeking out experts to continue to learn from. Telling someone how many years you’ve been doing something isn’t a flex without the ability to explain how you pursued excellence and best practices during that time. The “I’ve done this for x years” drop is an empty phrase by itself.

Excited to be a part of this ambitious program at Augusta Christian (GA). AC will be the first school to install “Feed the Cats” as the foundation of K-12 PE. In addition, FTC will be embraced in all sports. AC wants to become the model for other schools. The April 17th event will be open (and free) to anyone wishing to attend.

Sport coaches: When 90% of your HS team plays 1-2 other sports, it’s borderline negligent to NOT schedule at least one day a week in the weight room if you have the means to do so. #1- It will help directly help your own team. Why wouldn’t you want that? #2- It will also help each individual athlete stay more healthy and set them up for more success in their other sports too.

What "conditioning" means to me: The ability to hold perfect position, technique, and max speed/power longer than your opponent. Once you lose the capacity to maintain technique and position, your advantage is gone. Sub maximal "conditioning" doesn't build that. In fact, it works against it. It detrains the CNS and makes you slower, less powerful, and more prone to injury when it matters. If being a high performer is king, then by its very nature "conditioning" will always be my sworn enemy!! Train to stay fast and dominant under real duress, not just to "not get tired."
StrengthCoachNetwork@StrCoachNetwork

Enough is enough. Some coaches talk about “conditioning” like it’s the enemy. Why? Because they think conditioning only means: • 110s • 300-yard shuttles • running miles Those are methods, not the principle. That’s like saying you hate strength training because you don’t squat, bench, or deadlift. Good conditioning simply means an athlete can produce and recover from effort repeatedly in sport. Tempo work can be conditioning. Small-sided games can be conditioning. Circuits can be conditioning. This can be done on feet and off. Different tools. Same principle. The idea that conditioning is automatically “bad for athletes” is poor coaching. If you want a better breakdown, read this: strengthcoachnetwork.com/blog/What-Cond… Then Friday we go deep on the topic with Jonah Rosner (@jonisportsci) — former NFL performance coach now working with elite marathon runners — on the relationship between sprinting, strength, and conditioning.

High School S&C coaches see 300-500+ students a day with fully bought in school systems. It’s critical you hire a qualified person, but also the right-fit to train and impact your students daily If you get this hire right it’ll be the most impactful hire you make in the school

If a private trainer is not measuring jumps or timing sprints they’re stealing your money Every single one says they’re improving speed/jump but if they’ve never tracked it… If your school program tracks sprints/jumps/KPIs then go pay for extra SKILL work

As an AD, I implemented a strength program where every athlete lifts in season with their current team. I challenged coaches to scientifically prove it was not beneficial. No one could. It eliminated the tug of war over athletes and reinforced what we believe.
