Jon Scheyer's Impressive Milestone Achievement There was a little something extra in Jon Scheyer's smile last evening after his team went to 11-0 on the season with a win over Lipscomb in Cameron Indoor Stadium. And why not? Scheyer became the quickest coach in ACC Basketball history to reach 100 wins. Think about that for a second. The ACC was created in 1953, and it has seen legendary coaches too numerous to mention, yet Scheyer was atop the heap, breaking a record set by Vic Bubas, who also happened to be a great Duke coach in the early sixties. All of those after Buba's could not do what Scheyer did last evening, six decades later. And he has done this in the modern era of college basketball, adding perhaps even more depth to the accomplishment. What I saw in Scheyer's smile last evening was a brief pause on this season's quest for a title to reflect. Reaching one hundred wins is a milestone that, when he started against Jacksonville in his first game, likely seemed a long way off. Jon had taken over a Duke program with Mike Krzyzewski's blessings, not to mention Nina King, without ever being a head coach before. When you look back on his journey to date, you can point to growth at each step, but more importantly, you can see that his competitiveness made him the right choice for the position, and this stat we speak of cements that. Scheyer had to blow some things up at Duke while keeping much the same. He had to change a lot to keep up with the NIL era we have today. He surrounded himself with people who helped him grow, went outside the box a bit from what some were accustomed to, which is called doing things your own way. What I have seen this season from Scheyer is a man more relaxed with who he is and who he is becoming. He is more grizzled, toughened from the lessons learned, determined to do the one thing Duke fans covet most: keep the machine rolling. That means getting the best players in the nation to come to Duke, developing them, integrating them into a team concept, and either getting them to the next level or helping them find their way in life. Scheyer can point to the support system that has helped him, both as a player in Durham and now as a coach. He can share his journey where his pro career was cut short from injury, and how being a part of the Brotherhood offers other opportunities beyond being in the pros for basketball has many paths. The game itself was not that important last evening. It was a typically unusual Holiday game where the stats are bizarre, the calls are crazy, and the players are coming off a win over Michigan State and exam breaks, lacking their usual focus. Not many remember holiday games over time. The one thing that will be remembered is Scheyer's 100th win. In fact, Scheyer may remember this moment more than the average fan as he continues to stack wins into the future. For fans, these games get lost in memory as the big games come. Still, it is not every day that the Goat, aka Mike Krzyzewski, flanked by his daughter Debbie and Sxheyer's entire family, gets to see him reach a milestone, which just happened to be a phenomenal record -- at a Holiday game, when the students are on break. So, yeah, there was likely a sense of relief and accomplishment that Jon Scheyer deservedly basked in as he thought back on his journey to one hundred wins. I wanted to pepper Jon with more questions than the norm last evening. I wanted to ask if there was one win that stood out, etc. It seemed as if the great road win at Michigan State got lost a little bit with the football team winning the ACC title on the same day. In fact, the whole resume to date this season is impressive for Scheyer, his best yet. And that is a testament to what I know about him, watching him as a high school prospect, to a player, and now a coach at Duke. He won't give up, and if he gets knocked down, he will get up. Scheyer will keep at it. He will refine this program more along the way. He has it clicking, but it requires a person with his drive and energy to keep up with what it takes to build a proper roster and develop players. While the rest of us will be sneaking in some downtime around the break after the Texas Tech game, Scheyer will try to reach 200 wins by being on the phone with key prospects he thinks fit, while visiting a few gyms where some of them are playing. In other words, he will take some time to enjoy his feat, likely with some personal reflection, before bugging his staff to film-crash on the Red Raiders, which they take on Saturday in Madison Square Garden. In the modern-day business of college basketball, you have to move on quickly, another lesson Scheyer has learned. Milestones are nice, but Scheyer has other goals so that he will be back at work soon enough for the Duke coach. What happened last night was important for those behind the scenes as well. It was a moment when they could look back and say, I think we are getting this thing right. There is still more growth to come for Scheyer, but for the most part, this season, or where he is now, is as comfortable as he has been at Duke. And the future looks pretty bright for Scheyer, who did what once seemed impossible to many: he followed in the footsteps of a legend when college basketball had been blown up, and he kept the program from slipping. The Duke fanbase nationwide is growing under Scheyer. He has taken his place amongst the great coaches at the university. And five years in, it is really just beginning for him.

Curt Cignetti: Year 1: 11-2, playoff appearance Year 2: 12-0, Big Ten title game and playoff appearance. And he did it with an Indiana program that had just 3 winning seasons in the previous 30 years. Arguably the greatest turnaround in college sports history.
