#OnThisDay 1959 Admiral of the Fleet the Earl Mountbatten became Chief of the Defence staff, and is still the longest holder of the post (6 yrs). During his time he oversaw the merging of 5 Depts of State including the Admiralty to create the Ministry of Defence. @DefenceHQ

#OnThisDay 1941 @RoyalNavy Forces under Admiral Tovey intercepted and sank the German battleship Bismarck. Aircraft from ARK ROYAL disabled Bismarck’s steering gear allowing Toveys big guns in KING GEORGE V, @HMSPWLS, RODNEY and several others to finish the job of avenging HOOD.
